DJI Mavic Air 2 and DJI C5 Remote Controller confirmed in FCC filings

Today, in two separate FCC filings both a new DJI C5 Remote Controller, Model 231 (FCC ID SS3-RC2311911) and the DJI Mavic Air 2 (FCC ID SS3-MA2UE1N1911) are confirmed. Earlier leaked photos of a new DJI drone showed the name Mavic, this however only mentions the name . Both DJI products are expected to be released this spring or early summer.

DJI C5 Remote Controller, model RC231

Let’s start by taking a look at the new , model RC231. This filing has a short-term confidentiality release date of 07/08/202, indicating a release during the spring or early summer. The images from the FCC filing only show the label and the location of the label on the bottom of the RC. It is hard to be sure of this is the same controller as we have seen in the earlier leaked photos (see below), but it does appear to be. One thing that stands out it the heat sink on the RC. This is something we have not seen on remote controllers from the DJI Mavic, Mavic Air or Mavic 2 series. The overall design of the controller is a stark departure from those earlier models as well. With the DJI RC231, your smartphone will be mounted above the controller instead of below it.

The controller has an Fn or function button on the top left. A photo/video button on the top right. A return-to-home button, a switch to toggle between tripod, normal and sport mode, an on/off switch and four LED battery status indicator lights. We suspect there will be scroll wheels and buttons at the top of the RC as well but these are not visible in the photo.

DJI Mavic Air 2

The FCC filing shows the name 2, whereas the previously leaked imaged showed on the word MAVIC on the bottom of the drone. We suspect that the FCC filing and the drone in the leaked images are the same product, and thus it appears the DJI will go with the name DJI Mavic Air 2 instead of DJI Mavic.

In the FCC filing, it says that the FCC label will not be directly visible on the outside of the drone but rather: “It’s in the battery compartment back cover of could be easily opened without any special tools.”

It is important to point that the new Mavic Air 2, which will weigh more than 250 grams, will be the first DJI drone that comes with so that it will be able to notify the pilot in control of any nearby manned aircraft as long as those manned aircraft have a working ADS-B Out signal.

Based on the leaked photos we also expect the Mavic Air 2 to come with 360-degree omnidirectional obstacle sensing and avoidance, making the DJI Mavic Air 2 the safest DJI drone ever.

The FCC filing shows the same short-term confidentiality release date of 07/08/2020, indicating they the DJI C5 Remote Controller and the DJI Mavic Air 2 will indeed be part of the same DJI Product offering that is expected to be released some time this spring or early summer.
