Power of Drones: Changing the Landscape of Modern Warfare
In today's warfare, the sheer number of drones has revolutionized how battles are fought, drastically reducing the time troops and tanks can remain undetected. A Ukrainian military official recently raised eyebrows with his revelation about the swift and potentially deadly efficiency of these unmanned aircraft.
Vadym Skibitsky, the deputy commander of Ukraine's HUR military intelligence service, mentioned in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, “Today, a column of tanks or a column of advancing troops can be discovered in three to five minutes and hit in another three minutes.” He further added, “The survivability on the move is no more than 10 minutes.”
Drones: The Rise of Affordable Warfare
It's not just the sheer number, but the affordability and effectiveness of drones that's causing a shift in military strategies. While both Russia and Ukraine deploy thousands of drones, Ukraine has notably leveraged cheap, first-person-view drones (FPVs) to target and incapacitate expensive Russian military hardware.
These FPVs, which cost between $400 to $500, are proving to be a cost-efficient strategy when compared to traditional warfare tools. To put it into perspective, a regular 155mm artillery shell costs around $3,000, and a T-72 tank has a staggering price of about $1.2 million.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, provided some astonishing numbers from last week: unmanned Ukrainian aerial vehicles successfully struck a record 205 pieces of Russian military hardware, which included 64 cannons, 27 tanks, and 55 trucks.
Questioning American Military Doctrine
With drones proving their mettle on the battlefield, it brings into focus some fundamental aspects of the American military doctrine. Bradley Crawford, a retired US Army sergeant and Iraq war veteran, expressed his thoughts on the matter to the newspaper, saying, “The days of massed armored assaults, taking many kilometers of ground at a time, like we did in 2003 in Iraq — that stuff is gone because the drones have become so effective now.”
Drones in the Spotlight
While the exact count of drones used remains undetermined, the Royal United Services Institute estimated Ukraine was losing around 10,000 drones monthly, pointing to their widespread utilization.
These figures, coupled with Skibitsky's remarks, underscore the undeniable influence of drones in modern warfare and hint at a changing paradigm of battle tactics and strategies in the years to come.
