Ukraine Braces for Surge in Drone Attacks This Winter
Drones in the sky and the chill of winter are becoming a fearsome combination for Ukraine. A concerning forecast has emerged from the country's air force: they're gearing up for an unprecedented number of drone attacks from Russia in the coming months. According to spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat, recent data indicates that Russia's use of Iranian-designed Shahed kamikaze drones will far surpass previous records.
Yuriy Ihnat, shedding light on the matter, mentioned, “This autumn and winter … is already a record in terms of the number of Shahed drones. Over 500 (were used) in September.” To put this in perspective, he compared it with the data from the previous winter, revealing that “about 1,000 Shahed drones were used in six months.”
Dire Consequences from Past Drone Attacks
Last winter wasn't kind to Ukraine. Drone attacks targeted and crippled a substantial portion of their power infrastructure. The aftermath was grim – most cities had to implement stringent rationing for electricity and hot water. Even as Ukraine strengthens its air defenses, there's a looming shadow over the nation.
Officials caution about potential repeat attacks, especially since the power grid hasn't fully recovered from last winter's barrage, as highlighted by Reuters. As the winter chill sets in, the skies over Ukraine will be watched with bated breath.
