Armed Drones Could Guard Texas Schools Under New Security Bill

A groundbreaking bill filed for ‘s upcoming legislative session proposes using armed drones as school security measures, marking a significant shift in approaches to campus safety. State Representative Ryan Guillen’s legislation aims to enhance school security through a combination of traditional and technological solutions, reports KVUE News.

Major Funding Boost for School Security

The proposed legislation includes a substantial increase in school safety funding, raising the per-student allocation from $10 to $100. This tenfold increase would provide schools with greater flexibility in implementing security measures, whether through traditional armed officers or innovative drone programs.

Drone Implementation Details

The bill outlines a requirement for either an officer or drone for every 200 students, while maintaining a minimum of one armed officer on campus. These drones would be equipped with “less lethal” capabilities, including pepper spray and other defensive mechanisms, offering schools a technological alternative to traditional security personnel.

Industry Precedent

This isn’t the first venture into armed for school security. Axon, known for developing Tasers and body cameras, previously announced plans for security drones in 2022. CEO Rick Smith initiated this discussion following the tragic events at Robb Elementary School, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to school safety.

Funding and Implementation

With Texas projecting a $20 billion surplus for its 2025 legislative session, the financial framework for implementing these security measures appears solid. The proposed funding structure would allow schools to invest in either traditional security personnel or establish drone programs, providing flexibility in meeting security requirements.

Concerns and Considerations

The proposal hasn’t been without controversy. Similar initiatives, like Axon’s drone program, faced scrutiny from ethics boards and experts, particularly regarding concerns about the potential impact on over-policed communities of color.

DroneXL’s Take

The integration of drones for school security represents a significant evolution in drone technology applications. While the focus on “less lethal” capabilities aligns with responsible deployment, this initiative could set important precedents for first responder drone applications. The proposal’s emphasis on technological solutions while maintaining human oversight demonstrates a balanced approach to modern security challenges.
