Drone solution makes aircraft hangar a smart facility

A new drone solution from ST Engineering helps make an aircraft hangar a smart facility. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has authorized ST Engineering to use their in-house developed drone solution DroScan to perform General Visual Inspection (GVI) during aircraft maintenance.

ST Engineering will be able to use its drone solution on approved aircraft models such as the Airbus A320.
Using drones to perform the visual inspections eliminates the need to set up bulky ground equipment such as boom lifts and work stands for inspectors to climb up and down during a manual inspection.
Using a live video feed from the drone and post-flight images the inspectors can conduct the GVI in a much faster fashion.ย The images captured by the drone can be fed through special algorithms to detect and classify defects to assist inspectors in the Review process of the aircraft.
Using drones to perform these visual inspections can lead to higher efficiency and greater workspace safety during aircraft maintenance work. Using ST Engineering’s drone solution will help to digitally transform hangers and facilities into a smart work environment.
According to CAAS, this digital technology will enhance productivity and effectiveness in its operations.
โSuch innovations are in line with our vision to digitally transform the aviation industry. Especially, in this current COVID-19 environment, we hope to see an impetus for more of such novel solutions from our Singapore aviation companiesโ, said Kevin Shum, Director-General of CAAS, according to iHLS.
