The IDF took down a DJI Mavic 2 drone that belonged to Hezbollah. The DJI drone contained a memory card with photos revealing the Hezbollah operatives’ faces and vehicles that belonged to one of the Lebanese terror group’s units.
IDF takes down Hezbollah drone containing photos of operatives
The DJI Mavic 2 belonging to Hezbollah that was shot down by the IDF after it had infiltrated Israeli airspace had a memory card onboard containing photos of the operatives.
The unmanned aircraft reportedly belonged to the elite Radwan unit that uses DJI drones to collect intelligence on Israeli troops.
The photos seem to have been taken by mistake as they show identifiable faces and vehicles with license plate information. In one photo, operatives are seen flying another drone that had been taken down by the IDF a few months ago.
A recent report by the ALMA Research Center states that Hezbollah operates some 2,000 drones, ranging from DJI Mavic 2s to advanced UAS from Iran. The group also uses drones that are independently manufactured in-house.
In 2021, Hezbollah flew 74 drones into Israeli airspace which is less than the 94 drones in 2020. In 2019, 54 unmanned aircraft were flown across the border.
An IDF spokesperson said that “the IDF will continue to operate against any attempt by terrorists to violate Israeli sovereignty.”
Israel flies drones into Lebanon as well and some of them have been taken down by Hezbollah in the past.
Combat Intelligence Collection Corps’ 869th “Shachaf” unit regularly uses off-the-shelf DJI drones for reconnaissance missions.
Officially Israel and Lebanon are still at war.
