Drone footage shows Russian army dug trenches in highly radioactive area of Chernobyl

According to drone footage from ’s military released last week by Energoatom, the state-owned operator of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, Russian troops who invaded Ukraine’s Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant from the first week of their incursion until late last week dug pits and trenches in the exclusion zone, a highly radioactive area of Chernobyl, reports CNN.

The drone footage shows vacant trenches of abandoned military fortifications in an area known as the Red Forest.

According to Reuters, the Red Forest got its name when a vast region of pine trees turned red as a result of absorbing radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, which is regarded as the world’s worst nuclear catastrophe.

The shows tank tracks and disturbed ground in the Red Forest, which is considered the most contaminated area in the entire Chernobyl exclusion zone. Normally, the area is off-limits to anyone who doesn’t work there.

On Friday, Energoatom said it was unsure what Russian troops were doing in the Red Forest and that it was conceivable that they had received significant radiation exposure while digging or entrenching there.

If the Russian troops were not wearing anti-radiation protective gear, they may have inhaled thick radioactive dust kicked up by heavy Russian vehicles.

In the first week of the war in Ukraine, Russian troops captured Chernobyl. On Thursday, Russian soldiers announced their plan to withdraw and surrendered control to Ukrainian authorities. The facility is currently being run by Ukrainian authorities again.
