The Ocean Race, the premier around-the-world sailing competition, has been capturing breathtaking footage of the teams battling it out on the high seas using camera drones. Hand-catching drones on the high seas!

Getting steady, cinematic shots while flying a drone from a moving boat is no easy feat. In the past, drone pilots relied on the DJI Phantom 4 which featured a sturdy, grippable body that allowed pilots to launch and handcatch the drone without needing a landing pad on the limited deck space of a sailboat.

However, has evolved and many pilots now favor the more compact and feature-rich DJI Mavic 2 or 3. While the sleek design of the Mavic 3 doesn’t include the same built-in grips, inventive pilots have solved this problem by 3D printing custom grips that attach to the drone’s body, allowing them to confidently handcatch it just like the Phantom 4.
