Good day, folks! Shawn here from Air Photography. In today’s video, we’re doing a quick battery performance and overheating comparison of the new Hero 13 Black against the DJI Action 5 Pro. I have a full comparison covering different features, video samples, and low-light performance coming up probably next week. This video will focus strictly on the battery performance, recording time, and overheating of each camera.
New High-Performance Batteries
Both GoPro and DJI have released action cameras in the past week, introducing new high-performance batteries. The DJI Action 5 Pro features a 1950 mAh battery that is backward compatible with older cameras (Action 4 and Action 3). It requires a firmware update for older cameras, and older batteries can be used in the Action 5 Pro. On the other hand, the GoPro Hero 13 Black comes with a 1900 mAh battery that is not backward compatible. It only works with the Hero 13 Black, and older batteries cannot be used in the new model.
Battery Performance Tests
For these tests, I recorded at 4K resolution and disabled the GPS on the GoPro to ensure fairness. In the first test at 4K 30fps, the DJI Action 5 Pro recorded for 2 hours 43 minutes, while the GoPro Hero 13 Black lasted 1 hour 43 minutes. Neither camera overheated; both shut down due to depleted batteries.
In the second test at 4K 60fps, the DJI Action 5 Pro recorded for 2 hours 5 minutes before the battery was depleted, with no overheating issues. The GoPro Hero 13 Black, however, overheated after 51 minutes.
The third test at 4K 120fps pushed both cameras to their limits. The DJI Action 5 Pro managed to record for 1 hour 6 minutes before overheating, while the GoPro Hero 13 Black overheated after just 30 minutes.
Overheating Considerations
It’s important to note that these tests were conducted at a desk. Results may vary significantly in different environments. Outdoor activities with air movement may prevent overheating, while hot days with direct sunlight and little movement (e.g., car shows, trade shows) may increase the likelihood of overheating.
Charging Performance
The batteries also differ in charging performance. The DJI Action 5 Pro supports quick charging, going from 0% to 40% in 10 minutes, 80% in 24 minutes, and fully charged in 57 minutes. In contrast, the GoPro Hero 13 Black takes longer to charge, reaching only 32% in 24 minutes and requiring 1 hour 52 minutes for a full charge.
Conclusion
The DJI Action 5 Pro outperforms the GoPro Hero 13 Black in terms of battery life and charging speed. In some scenarios, you can get almost double the recording time with the Action 5 Pro, and the charging time is less than half that of the GoPro.
Both cameras produce excellent video quality, but they have different features that may be more important to some users. If you’re in the market for an action camera this fall, stay tuned for my full comparison video coming next week.
Thank you for watching, and we’ll see you in the next one!
