Drones Replace Fireworks at Ladysmith Light Up
Ladysmith is kicking off Christmas with something bold. No fireworks this year. Instead, the town is unleashing more than 300 flying robots into the night sky. It is either the future of holiday magic or the start of a very festive robot uprising.
As reported by Nanaimo News, more than 25,000 people are expected to pack the town for the Light Up Parade. Santa will be there, obviously, because he never misses free cookies. He will flip the big switch at about 6:15 p.m. with help from a seven year old who won a draw. Imagine winning a contest where your job is to turn on three hundred thousand lights while the whole town watches. No pressure, kiddo.
Festival president April Marrington says this is the first drone show on the island. They scrapped fireworks last year due to new safety rules. Drones are cleaner, quieter, and far less likely to light a Christmas tree on fire. Unless the drones malfunction, but what are the odds of that? Probably low, but never zero.
The day kicks off at 3 p.m. with a craft fair, food trucks, and street performers. The LED robots are back too. They glow, they dance, and they probably judge your winter outfit choices.
A Parade, Then Flying Robots Do Shapes in the Sky
The parade starts at 6:40 p.m. on First Ave. It runs from Methuen St. to the Symonds St. roundabout. Fifty nine floats will roll through town. After that, they cross Highway 1 because apparently parades and traffic need to battle every year. It keeps things exciting.
The drone show is planned for about 8:30 p.m. at Aggie Fields. But Marrington says that standing directly under a swarm of drones is not ideal. If you stand too close, all you will see are tiny blinking dots above your face. So the town recommends watching from a hill where you can see the full shapes, animations, and holiday magic.
The show itself was a mystery. Pixel Sky Animations is running it, and they were not revealing anything in advance…
Six Weeks of Christmas Chaos Ahead
Volunteers have spent almost two months putting up the lights around Ladysmith. They start after Remembrance Day. BC Hydro helps lift ornaments onto rooftops. Then a team connects everything together in a way that looks suspiciously like defusing a bomb from a holiday movie. They even set the timers on parade night so all the lights fire at the same time. It is holiday electricity magic.
Parking will be rough. Ladysmith expects heavy traffic with road closures on First Ave and Roberts St. Most parking spots are uphill. So you get a free leg workout with your Christmas joy. There are only two ways in and out of town, so patience is required. The good news is that everyone else is stuck too, so the whole experience feels like a community bonding event.
The six week Festival of Lights season continues after Thursday. Old Time Christmas lands on December 5. The Fire Rescue Santa Claus Parade returns on December 21, and Santa will be there again because that man works harder than anyone gives him credit for.
DroneXL’s Take
Drone shows are taking over holiday events, and Ladysmith is smart to jump on the trend. They are cleaner, quieter, and much easier on pets that think fireworks are the end of days. If the weather behaves, this drone show could deliver glowing snowflakes, flying reindeer, and whatever else Pixel Sky decides to whip up. It is a modern twist on a classic tradition, and honestly, it feels like the future of Christmas.
