Insta360 App Tutorial: How To Edit Multiview and Split Screen Videos

Good day folks. Shawn here from Air Photography. I have a quick little tutorial for you today. Iโ€™m going to demonstrate how to utilize the split screen or multiview feature when using it with something like your Insta360 X4 Air or your X5. In theory, this will work with older models as well.

The nice thing about capturing in a spherical format with the 360 camera is that later on we can choose the view, the angle, and export it as a flat video. But the other nice thing is because there are two cameras and weโ€™re capturing in multiple directions, we can utilize the split screen feature and get some really unique videos.

Iโ€™m going to be demonstrating how to utilize this feature on an iPad, but this works the same way whether youโ€™re doing it on a tablet or a smartphone.

Getting started with multiview

The first thing weโ€™re going to do is launch our Insta360 app, and then navigate to your album where all your content is stored. You can also do this directly off the camera without downloading the footage first, but I like to download it first. I find it the easiest and itโ€™s a little bit more responsive.

Iโ€™m going to select a video that was captured in 360 while riding on a scooter. The first thing we can do is set our aspect ratio. Right now, itโ€™s 9ร—16, which is great for short form content, but if you want a more traditional aspect, we can change that.

To get into the split screen feature, there are a couple different ways to do it. The easiest is by tapping on the keyframe button on the side, that little diamond. This is where we can set keyframes, but the other tool it gives us is something called multiview. Tap on that, and down at the bottom, it gives us different options for different types of views.

Theyโ€™ve actually made some recent updates to this tool and given us some new features.

The mini window option

Letโ€™s start with the mini window. When we tap on it, we still have our big 16ร—9, but we also have this little mini window. The way itโ€™s currently set, the big window is facing forward and the small window is facing me.

When we tap on it, we get this little yellow area over the timeline. Wherever that is highlighted, thatโ€™s where the split screen is going to be. You may just want it throughout sections of your video, not through the whole thing. You can set a new multiview at different points throughout the video.

We can actually resize it by dragging it, which dictates how long that effect is used. If we go along to another blank spot, we can tap on that again to add another one and resize it as well. If you want to delete one, just highlight it and tap on full screen to remove that section.

If you want it for the whole video, pinch to shrink your timeline to make it easier, then tap on that handle and drag it to the end. Now that split screen will be over the whole video.

Customizing your split screen

There are many different things we can do with these split screens. First, we can move where the mini window is located. Youโ€™ll see an icon in the top right hand side. If we tap on that, we can pull it around the screen. We can also resize it to make it bigger, and we can still move it around.

We can change the perspective of the shot as well. We might want a wider shot on that front-facing one, or we might want to zoom in a little bit more. Same with the little mini window โ€” we can manipulate it just by using our fingers to give us a nice wide shot. Itโ€™s very flexible in how you utilize it.

We can also give it more radius on the corners. You can drag that little bar at the bottom, and thatโ€™s going to go from a square edge to a nice rounded edge. Itโ€™s all personal preference on what you prefer.

Once youโ€™re happy with it, all you have to do is hit the check mark and then export it to your phone. In your camera roll, youโ€™ll see the video with the split screen, rounded corner, front-facing view, and selfie view up in the corner.

You can get really creative with this. You can go in and set keyframes to control the motion, add different movements, and use other editing effects. You may want the main window as yourself and perhaps the top window as the front-facing view.

Dual screen option

They have one called dual screen which gives us a side by side view with a front-facing view on one side and rear-facing view on the other. If youโ€™re doing a vertical video, one would be on top of the other, split in the middle.

A nice feature when using this method is that we can actually blend the middle, so itโ€™s not such a hard line. Thereโ€™s a blend button at the bottom, and it kind of blends the two views together so itโ€™s not such a harsh line.

Three-way and four grid layouts

Thereโ€™s also a three-way split which is very similar, but now it gives us an option for three different views. We can have a front-facing view, a selfie view, and a little tiny planet or whatever kind of view we want. Perhaps we want just a close-up view. Just like before, we can use the slider at the bottom to blend it together so thereโ€™s not such a harsh line. If you were doing this in vertical, they would all be stacked on top of one another.

Lastly, thereโ€™s a four grid layout. It works the same as before, but now we have four different windows where we can set the view. Again, you can get creative and set keyframes and add different movements.

Personally, I think having four different viewpoints is a little much, but the split screen is nice. Even the little mini window is a nice option as well, especially for social media. You can get some really interesting content.

So there you have it, folks โ€” a quick little tutorial on how to utilize the split screen multiview with your Insta360 camera. Hopefully, you enjoyed this video and found it had value. Thanks a lot for watching and weโ€™ll see you in the next one.
