Princeton Police Launches DJI Matrice 4T Drone Program

The Princeton Police Department just added serious eyes to the sky. The department has taken delivery of a DJI Matrice 4T, one of DJI’s most capable public safety drones, and officially launched a new Unmanned Aircraft System program aimed at improving officer safety and community protection, as WVVA reports.

This is not a hobby drone with a badge taped on. The Matrice 4T sits firmly in the professional category, the kind of aircraft built for long missions, complex environments, and moments where guessing is not an option.

How Princeton Police Will Use the Matrice 4T

The drone will be operated by trained and certified pilots who comply with FAA Part 107 requirements. That detail matters, because it signals structure, accountability, and a program designed to last rather than a shiny toy phase.

According to the department, the Matrice 4T will support a wide range of operations, including officer overwatch in dangerous situations, crime scene documentation, suspect tracking, and locating missing persons. It will also be used to create crash scene diagrams and monitor large public events like festivals, concerts, and community gatherings.

In practice, this means fewer blind corners for officers, faster situational awareness, and safer outcomes for everyone involved. A thermal camera does not get tired, does not panic, and does not need to step into harm’s way to see what is happening.

Grant Funding Made It Possible

The program was made possible through a grant awarded by the Community Foundation of the Virginias, secured by Chief B.R. Woodard.

Grant funded drone programs are becoming increasingly common in public safety, and for good reason. They allow departments to adopt advanced tools without diverting resources from other critical needs.

Chief Woodard summed it up simply, saying the grant allowed the department to take another step forward in providing the best possible public service to the community. Translation: better tools, better outcomes, fewer unnecessary risks.

DroneXL’s Take

Let me be honest for a moment. Every time I read about a police department rolling out a Matrice 4T, a small part of my brain whispers, I want one. Not in a tactical sense, but in a pure aviation admiration sense.

The Matrice 4T is one of those drones that feels unapologetically serious. Rock solid airframe, excellent thermal performance, reliable flight time, and the kind of sensor package that makes consumer drones feel like paper airplanes with cameras.

Seeing departments like Princeton Police use it the right way is exactly what this platform was built for. This is not about surveillance theater. It is about safer officers, faster searches, cleaner documentation, and smarter decision making. And yes, it is also a reminder that DJI doesn’t need a lobby to be chosen as the best drone brand for DFR.
