How to Start Flying Drones: What to Buy, What the Law Requires, and What Your First Flight Should Look Like
What a first drone should cost, which rules apply before you take off, and how to run a first flight that ends with the aircraft intact. Written by a pilot who has been flying since 2016 and teaching beginners for most of that time.

Most first drones meet one of two ends. They fly twice and live in a drawer, or they hit something in week one and convince their owner the whole idea was a mistake. Both come from treating the purchase as the hard part of this hobby. The purchase is the easy part.
The short answer: budget around $300, spend $30 of it on a throwaway quad and crash that one first, pass the free TRUST test before you take off, and make your first real flight almost entirely hovering. I have been flying since 2016 and teaching new pilots for most of that time, and the ones who are still flying a year later were all boring for their first ten hours.

I am Rafa. I fly commercially, with credits that include Porsche, BMW, and MINI Cooper, I teach people to fly, and I write about drones for DroneXL. None of it started with good gear. It started on a balcony in Quito at five in the morning, three batteries a day, 65 feet up and 165 feet out and back, until the machine stopped feeling like a stranger. Are you ready to fly, or do you just like the footage?
Answer this one honestly before you spend anything, because it decides whether the drone gets flown or shelved. Beautiful aerial video is the product of flight hours, location scouting, good light, and editing. Buying the drone gets you the tool and none of the rest.
Then work through the questions that actually predict who keeps flying:
- Can you fly where you live? Manhattan, Washington D.C., and anywhere near a major restricted zone turn every flight into a planning exercise. That is survivable. Finding out after the purchase is not.
- Do you have 30 minutes a day? A drone left alone for two weeks comes back with a degraded battery, and a pilot who flies monthly never improves. At this stage consistency beats gear by a wide margin.
- Is $300 money you can afford to break? If that makes you flinch, start at $30 instead. It is a real recommendation, not a hedge.
- Will you read the manual? The pilots who call return-to-home a bug are the ones who never read that it is a feature.
- How do you react when technology misbehaves? Frustration or curiosity. Asking “what just happened” is what turns a crash into a lesson. Blaming the aircraft is what repeats it.
One more that people skip: accessories are not optional. Extra batteries, a case, ND filters, spare propellers, memory cards. If that budget does not exist, you are buying an object for a shelf.
What actually matters in a drone under $300?
The radio link matters more than the camera, and almost nobody shopping in this bracket knows it. Manufacturers quote range in ideal conditions: open field, clear sky, no interference. In a city full of buildings and antennas, plan on roughly 30 percent of that figure. A drone rated at 0.6 miles gives you something like 1,000 feet of signal you can trust.
Camera quality matters, but it is not your limiting factor yet. Your limiting factor is your thumbs and your eye for composition. Steady flying with an average sensor will always out-shoot a good sensor being thrown around the sky.
Flight time is a trap. Twelve minutes is plenty to practice with. The number that changes your progress is how many batteries you own, because that is what sets the length of a session.
Obstacle avoidance deserves suspicion at every price. Sensors handle a wall or a fat tree trunk. A thin branch, sometimes. A wire, never. That stays true on fifteen-thousand-dollar aircraft, so do not let it make you brave at three hundred.
Repairability is the check most beginners skip. Search for replacement propellers and batteries for the exact model before you buy. If they are hard to find or oddly expensive, that drone has a short life ahead of it.
Weight class decides your paperwork. In the United States, 0.55 lbs is the registration threshold, and staying under 8.8 oz keeps your obligations lighter in most countries. At this price point that is worth optimizing for.
That framework does not expire, which is the point of writing it down. Models do.
Which drones make sense at this price?
Four options cover almost everyone. Two of them are DJI, because DJI still makes the smoothest beginner experience at this price. DJI Neo 2, the one I would buy
The DJI Neo 2 is where my $300 goes. In its basic configuration, drone plus one battery, it has been selling between $199 and $259 depending on the retailer, which leaves room in the budget for the batteries you are going to want.

Flown from the DJI Fly app on a phone it gives you 200 feet of altitude and 1,640 feet of range, and it also flies on hand gestures alone, which earns its keep when you are moving fast without a controller. Against the original Neo it adds front-facing LiDAR sensing, 360-degree obstacle detection, and 4K at 100 frames per second. DJI Mini 4K, the runner-up
The DJI Mini 4K is the pick if you want GPS stability and a conventional folding form factor. It sits under 8.8 oz, so the paperwork stays light in most countries, and the camera is better than the price suggests.

It gives up the Neo 2’s obstacle sensing, so give it room around trees. For open outdoor flying it is reliable in a way that builds confidence quickly. Billy Kyle’s Neo versus Mini 4K comparison is the fastest way to settle which of the two suits you.
Potensic Atom SE, the non-DJI option
If you would rather not put your money into the DJI ecosystem, for political reasons, budget discipline, or simple preference, Potensic is the honest alternative at this price. The Atom SE runs well under $200, stays under 8.8 oz, and delivers GPS-stabilized flight with a 4K camera that behaves respectably for a learning platform.

What separates it from the sea of no-name quads is boring and important: parts are available, the app works, and the flight behavior is predictable. The tradeoff is real, though. Range is shorter than DJI’s, image processing is a step behind, and firmware arrives less often. You are buying independence and paying for it in polish. The $30 trainer, and why it is not a joke

A 998-class quad or anything similar costs $25 to $35, has no GPS and no stabilization, and flies like a nervous insect. That is the feature. With nothing assisting you, every input is yours and every mistake is legible. Fly it into walls and trees on purpose. Learn what your hands do when you lose orientation, because you will lose orientation, and it is far better to discover your panic reflex on a $30 aircraft than a $300 one. The emotional cost is about a tenth as high and the lesson is identical.

By the time you read this there may be a Neo 3, a Mini 5 Pro successor, or a brand that did not exist when I wrote the sentence. Prices move constantly, so check the live figure before you commit rather than trusting any number in a buying guide, including this one. Our DJI deals tracker is the place to check. What do you have to do before you ever take off?
Do all of this at home, in this order, because every one of these steps fails better on your kitchen table than at a launch site with a battery draining.
- Open everything and remove every protection: stickers, foam, plastic covers, lens caps.
- Charge the drone batteries and the controller. Fresh disposables if your model takes them.
- Install the app your drone needs, whether that is DJI Fly, Potensic GO, or another.
- Complete the account registration and any firmware setup the app demands.
- Insert a charged battery and power the drone on at home, not to fly, but to trigger the software updates and logins that always appear at the worst moment.
- Register the aircraft if your country requires it. In the United States that means anything at or above 0.55 lbs.
- Take the free TRUST test if you are flying recreationally in the United States. It takes about 30 minutes, it is legally required, and you must carry proof of it when you fly.
- Pick your flying location before you leave the house.
- Check the weather. Wind is the enemy of a first flight. Gusty means another day.
- Check the airspace with B4UFLY or the app your drone uses, and cross-reference. DJI’s app has been known to miss heliports.
- Tell someone where you are going.
Once you are on site, scan before you set the aircraft down. Power lines and electrical towers, trees and mid-height branches, water in any form, cell towers and scaffolding, and children and pets, who move unpredictably and are magnetically attracted to drones.
My recommendation for the first location is a large open park, early morning. Fewer people means fewer distractions and nobody asking questions before you have the confidence to answer them calmly.
Which rules can you not skip?
Six rules cover the overwhelming majority of recreational flying in the United States, and they exist because drones share airspace with aircraft carrying people. Learning them protects you, protects everyone above you, and protects the hobby from the regulation that follows a bad incident.
400 feet above ground level. Above ground, not above sea level, and not above your takeoff point if you launched from a roof. Start on a 200-foot building and your usable climb is 200 feet, not 400. Manned aircraft have a 500-foot minimum. That 100-foot gap is the whole safety margin.
Visual line of sight. Your own eyes, not a screen and not goggles. The reason is specific: you can lose the video feed while keeping the control link, and if you cannot see where the aircraft is pointing, you cannot bring it home.
Nothing over people or moving vehicles. A falling drone is dangerous in proportion to its weight and altitude, and nobody wants to run that calculation on a windshield at highway speed.
Nothing near airports. Manned aircraft always have priority. Check a map before every flight rather than scanning the sky, because helipads and air corridors are invisible from the ground.
No night flying without proper lighting. Recreational night flight requires lighting that makes you visible to other aircraft, and in some jurisdictions a waiver on top of that. Rules vary by country, so check yours.
Remote ID. Think of it as a digital license plate. Your aircraft broadcasts identity, position, altitude, and speed to anyone nearby with a receiver, including enforcement. Most drones sold after mid-2023 comply out of the box, and older ones need a module in most countries.
TRUST covers recreational flying only. The moment a flight serves any purpose beyond your own enjoyment, including footage you monetize or photos of a property you are selling, you need a Part 107 certificate instead. Our Part 107 guide covers what that costs and what it still does not let you do.
What should a first flight look like?
Almost entirely hovering, which is not the answer anyone wants. Run the pre-flight list one more time before you leave: batteries charged across drone, controller, and accessories, memory card in and formatted, propellers on and spun by hand to check for wobble, firmware current, airspace checked, and wind under 15 mph.
At the location, follow this sequence:
- Pick a large flat area with no people, trees, or power lines inside 165 feet.
- Put the drone on the flattest ground you can find. No hand launches on day one.
- Power on in order: phone to controller, then controller, then aircraft. Always that order.
- Wait for a full GPS lock before lifting off. Rushing this is how you end up with no home point, which is what makes return-to-home work at all.
- Climb 3 to 6 feet and hover. That is the entire first exercise. Watch the drone, not the screen.
- Fly slow and deliberate: forward, back, left, right. You are learning control sensitivity, not practicing maneuvers.
- Practice yaw last. Rotating the nose reverses your control directions relative to your body, and it disorients almost everyone at first.
- Land at 30 percent battery and walk over to collect the aircraft rather than flying it back at yourself.
What do you do when something goes wrong in the air?
Fix your position before you touch the sticks, because most in-flight problems are signal problems wearing a disguise. If the drone starts drifting against your inputs, reposition the controller antennas first, then move higher or away from whatever structure is between you and the aircraft.
Still drifting? Press return-to-home and let the aircraft handle its own recovery. Wind is the exception. If you are being pushed rather than losing signal, Sport mode is the one advanced setting I hand a beginner, because you need the extra power to make headway. Feed in gentle forward stick, lose altitude steadily, and bring it in low.
If you lose orientation and cannot tell which way the nose is pointing, do not correct blindly. Use the landmarks you picked out on the ground, whatever they were, to work out where the aircraft is sitting relative to you, then walk it home slowly.
If you lose sight of it completely, open the map in your app and walk toward the last known GPS position. Stay calm. It almost certainly landed rather than vanished, and panicked inputs are what turn a recoverable situation into a lost aircraft.
You are going to crash. What happens after that?
There are two kinds of drone pilot: the ones who have crashed and the ones who are about to. Physics does not negotiate, wind gusts do not announce themselves, and a tired pilot makes bad decisions. What matters is that most crashes are caused by the pilot rather than the aircraft, which is both the humbling part and the useful part, because it means the failure is something you can fix.

There will be a moment of silence while you look at the pieces and think about the money. That is normal. What you do next is the part that decides what kind of pilot you become:
- Do not fly again that day.
- Within a day or two, replay the flight in your head. What was your last input before impact? Wind, disorientation, distraction, or a command in the wrong direction?
- Write it down. The lesson is in the sequence of events, not in the wreckage.
- Order the parts, then go back out.
Pilots who quit after a first crash were not bad pilots. They just did not know the crash was part of the syllabus.
How should you behave around other people?
Assume every flight you take is the only impression of drone pilots that someone will ever get, because for plenty of bystanders that is exactly what it is. Fly badly near people and you are the reason a park puts up a no-drone sign.
The short version: stay away from anyone who did not consent to a camera overhead, keep out of backyards and away from windows, and go higher and keep moving whenever you are unsure. Land before you talk to anyone who approaches you, because your attention belongs on the aircraft. When a guard or property manager asks you to land somewhere you are within your rights, evaluate rather than argue, since relocating costs twenty minutes and an escalation costs far more. If another pilot is already up when you arrive, agree who is where and at what altitude before you launch.

What comes after the first flight?
Ten hours of stick work, and no photography at all. This is where most beginners plateau, because they start chasing footage before they have control, and the footage stays mediocre until the control arrives.
Practice these patterns in order until they are smooth: clean squares with 90-degree corners, orbits at a fixed distance and altitude in both directions, figure eights that force you to switch yaw direction continuously, and orbits with the camera locked on a subject throughout. That last one is the foundation of every cinematic drone shot there is. When all four are smooth, you are not a beginner anymore.
Then start paying attention to when you fly rather than what you fly. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset make ordinary locations look cinematic, and midday sun flattens everything. Watch the direction of light relative to your subject. That decision separates aerial video that looks like everyone else’s from aerial video that stops someone scrolling.
Learn the named moves deliberately: the reveal, rising from behind an obstacle to expose the landscape; the orbit; the fly-through, passing an arch or a gap in one continuous move; and the crane, climbing while tilting the camera up to hold the frame. The crane is my favorite and the hardest of the four.
Upgrade when the equipment is genuinely your limiting factor, meaning you can name the shot you cannot get or the client you cannot serve. Not when a manufacturer announces something. Capability you have not grown into is confidence you have not earned.

That is the whole path, and none of it requires talent. It requires showing up, treating every crash as data, and flying more often than you buy. Your best shot is still ahead of you, which is the part of this that never gets old.
