DJI firmware updates arrive constantly and matter unevenly. This page collects them so you can tell the difference between a release worth installing tonight and a changelog of vague improvements.

Some updates fix genuine faults. The Avata 360 firmware that fixed the black-screen FPV bug is the clear case — a fault that ruins the flight, fixed. On the app side, a DJI Mimo update finally made footage sync while you pack, which is a real workflow change rather than a version bump.

Others are oversold, and we try to say so. New Mavic 4 Pro firmware will not fix your flying — settings, and practice, do far more for footage than any release note. If you want the settings that actually help, start with the Mini 5 Pro hidden features guide and the DJI Fly app hub.

Firmware is also a regulatory instrument, which is the part most coverage misses. When DJI pulled the Matrice 4D’s C6 compliance off the dock, it changed what STS-02 operators had to buy. That is a firmware story with a procurement consequence, and it is why we cover releases alongside the FAA and FCC desks. Every firmware story lands in the feed below.

Key facts

What this covers
Firmware for DJI drones and cameras, plus the DJI Fly and Mimo app releases that ship alongside them
What updates genuinely fix
Real bugs — the Avata 360 black-screen FPV fault is a clear example of a release worth installing promptly
What they do not fix
Piloting. A release note is not a substitute for practice, and we say so when a changelog is being oversold
Compliance angle
Firmware also carries regulatory changes, such as DJI moving the Matrice 4D's C6 compliance off the dock

DJI Mimo Update Finally Syncs Your Footage While You Pack

DJI's Mimo v2.11.2 gives the Osmo Pocket 4P automatic file transfer, silently sending photos and videos to your phone the moment you power the camera off — plus 4K Live Photos and shareable editing presets.

DJI Avata 360 firmware update fixes black-screen FPV bug

DJI has released Avata 360 firmware v01.00.0500 after reports that the earlier v01.00.0300 update caused black-screen video loss in FPV goggles, a failure that hit the one system FPV pilots cannot afford to lose.

University of Houston Builds a Provable Drone Safety Net

A University of Houston engineer says she has built a real-time monitor that keeps a quadrotor from crashing when a gust shoves it off course. Marzia Cescon calls it a “safety supervisor,” a software module that rides onboard the drone and watches its tilt and position while it flies. When the math predicts the aircraft…

SkyRover X1 Crashes to $449, a $309 Cut on the Sub-249g 4K Foldable

The SkyRover X1 just dropped to its lowest price ever, $449 at B&H, down from a $758 list. That is a $309 cut on a sub-250g foldable drone that flies 4K60 HDR, ships with 360-degree obstacle sensing, and walks into the FAA-registration-free zone by weighing exactly what a small bag of coffee weighs. The deal…

FCC Extends Foreign Drone Firmware Waiver To January 2029, Concedes Cutting Off Patches Would Be Worse Than The Ban

The Federal Communications Commission‘s Office of Engineering and Technology released Public Notice DA 26-454 on Friday, May 8, 2026, extending its waiver for software and firmware updates to previously authorized foreign-made drones, UAS critical components, and consumer routers until at least January 1, 2029. The earlier deadlines were January 1, 2027 for drones and March…

Frequently asked questions

Should I always install DJI firmware updates?

Install the ones that fix faults you could actually hit — the Avata 360 black-screen bug is the obvious case. Beyond that, read what the release claims to change. Updating immediately before an important flight has its own risk, and a changelog full of vague improvements is not a reason to reflash on the morning of a shoot.

Can a firmware update improve my footage?

Rarely as much as the release notes imply. We have said plainly that new Mavic 4 Pro firmware will not fix your flying — settings and practice do far more for your footage than a version number.

Do firmware updates change what I am legally allowed to do?

Sometimes, yes. Firmware carries geofencing behaviour and compliance labelling, and DJI has used releases to change certification arrangements — moving the Matrice 4D's C6 compliance off the dock changed what STS-02 operators had to buy.
