Last Tuesday, first responders were able to rescue a man and three children from the James River in Concord, VA with help from a Dual .

With the summer in full swing, more people are going to the water to cool down, however, this also means water rescues are reaching new high levels.

On Tuesday night the Concord Appomattox Swift Water team responded after a man and three children were reported missing near Mount Athos Road.

Fire Chief Stephen Hamlett says that the rescue team deployed its Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual to help quickly locate the group. The Fire Chief also said that the drone has cut down on the department’s response time and manpower required for water rescues. He continued to say that the thermal drone helps the team to get in and out as quickly and safely as is humanly possible.

“Especially with the water as low as it is right now, getting a boat down the river is extremely hard to you know rescue somebody right now,” Hamlett said, according to ABC3News.

In 2020, according to Hamlett, they’ve had nearly 30 water rescues already which is nearly doubled their normal yearly average. The Concord Volunteer Fire Department has received the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual thermal drone through agrant. This unmanned aircraft allows the first responders to communicate to people stranded on the river by means of a loudspeaker.
