On June 1, 2023, Siemens Healthineers Middle East, Southern & Eastern Africa partnered with German drone service provider Wingcopter GmbH. They inked a Memorandum of Understanding to develop Africa’s first integrated drone delivery solution for medical supplies.

This initiative seeks to revolutionize healthcare in Africa by enabling faster diagnoses and treatments in rural communities. The 2-way delivery system will transport lab samples, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals using highly automated drones and Laboratory Information Systems for accurate tracking and reporting.

“At Siemens Healthineers, we are committed to providing access to care for everyone,” remarked Ole Maloy, Managing Director. “Our partnership with Wingcopter will look to bridge the existing gaps in healthcare infrastructure, providing equitable and affordable access to diagnostic testing and medical supplies.”

This ground-breaking system will rely on Wingcopter’s drones, interlinked with Siemens Healthineers’ laboratory facilities, enabling swift, automated transportation within a 50-mile radius. Ensuring cold chain integrity, the drones offer a sustainable, efficient solution for centralized distribution of medical supplies, driving cost reductions, and improving turnaround times.

Wingcopter CEO and Co-founder, Tom Plümmer, sees great potential in the partnership, stating, “We are convinced that we have found the perfect partner for our bold ambitions to improve and save the lives of millions of people on the African continent and beyond.”

The World Bank and WHO note that approximately half of the global population lacks essential health services like timely diagnostic services. This pioneering drone delivery solution, besides augmenting diagnostic accessibility, will also contribute positively to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by reducing carbon footprint, road accident risks, and capacity building on drone operations. Mirroring their operations in Malawi, Wingcopter plans to upskill local youth and create job opportunities in the fast-expanding drone industry.

The first deployment of the Wingcopter drone-based lab sample deliveries is forthcoming, with details to be announced in due course.
