Chinese-made drone locates children and adults after kayaks overturn
A distressing event unfolded at the heart of South Salt Lake, Utah, as several children and adults capsized in the Jordan River during a canoeing trip. Among the victims were seven middle schoolers and two adults from the Tracy Aviary's camp excursion, whose two out of four canoes overturned.
As soon as the South Salt Lake Police received the call, they rushed to the scene, joined by local fire crews and their invaluable high-tech ally—a Chinese-made drone, a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced.
The Unmanned Aircraft System became their “eyes in the sky,” playing a crucial role in locating the group who had been swept away by the powerful current.
The released drone footage shows the robotic ally swiftly hovering over a capsized canoe, then rushing upstream to spot some of the castaways. After a diligent search, it eventually found the remaining members of the group.
Officer Mullins reportedly piloted the drone, and its birds-eye view proved invaluable in assessing the situation within the thickly wooded area. The drone's perspective guided rescuers to ensure the safety of those who had fallen into the river.
Fortunately, all group members had donned life jackets before the mishap, allowing them to safely exit the river upon the rescue crews' arrival. Though nobody was injured, one child was taken to the hospital, a measure taken as per the parents' request.
