Moore and Norman PDs to Showcase Drone Skills for Charity

In an unprecedented event, the Moore and Norman Police Departments in Oklahoma are gearing up to compete in a high-stakes, high-speed drone race this March.

Major League Drone Racing is hosting this unique competition to showcase the officers’ piloting abilities and raise money for a good cause.

Preparing for the Challenge

Sgt. Kent Dunbar from the Moore Police Department shared insights into their preparation for the event. “On our days off, we’ll just have to get out there in an open field and get good at controlling them as fast as they’ll go,” he said, according to Koco News 5.

Both departments will field five pilots each in a friendly yet competitive race to determine the ultimate drone ace. The event is set to take place at the Moore High School football field, where pilots will navigate through an intricate obstacle course.

The Drone Race Format

The competition will involve time trials and elimination rounds, culminating in a final showdown between the two top pilots.

The challenging course will require the pilots to serpentine around poles, pass through gates, and follow a precise path, testing their agility and precision under pressure.

Supporting a Charitable Cause

The event, scheduled for March 16, will serve as a fundraiser, with a significant portion of the ticket sales being donated to the OK Kids Korral of the Toby Keith Foundation.

This organization provides free housing for families with children undergoing cancer treatment in the state.

The cause is particularly close to Dunbar’s heart, as he has a medically complex child himself. “I’ve got some bias toward that specific thing,” he explained.

Bragging Rights and Friendly Rivalry

While the event is in good spirit and for a worthy cause, both departments are eager to claim bragging rights. Dunbar expressed his hopes for Moore PD to emerge victorious and turn the competition into an annual triumph.

On the other hand, the Norman Police Department, despite being relatively new to drone operations, expressed confidence in their ability to outperform their rivals.

Anticipation for the Big Day

As the community awaits this unique and exciting event, more information on ticket purchases and event details can be found on the Major League Drone Racing’s website.

This high-speed drone race not only promises an exhilarating experience for spectators but also demonstrates the versatile skills of law enforcement in a fun and charitable setting.
