Kamikawa Announces Financial Aid in Kyiv

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, in an unexpected visit to Kyiv, sought shelter in a bomb shelter during an air alert.

She announced substantial Japanese support to help Ukraine combat Russian drone strikes, pledging millions to NATO and donating crucial equipment, reported Reuters.

Responding to Drone Crisis

Kamikawa emphasized Japan’s commitment to Ukrainian peace, allocating $37 million to a NATO Trust Fund for drone detection systems.

Additionally, Japan’s contribution of mobile gas turbine generators and transformers addresses the power cuts Ukraine suffered due to Russian air strikes last winter.

Meetings with Ukrainian Leaders

Amidst the air raid alerts, Kamikawa met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

Their discussions focused on Ukraine’s defensive needs, with Japan considering shipping Patriot air defense missiles to the U.S. to indirectly support Ukraine.

This decision marks a significant shift in Japan’s arms export policy.

Japan’s Ongoing Support

As part of its commitment, Japan plans to host a Japan-Ukraine conference in February to discuss recovery and reconstruction efforts. Kamikawa’s visit highlights Japan’s increasing involvement in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
