In a significant development for aerial photography and mapping technology, DJI has announced the release of a new firmware update for its Zenmuse L2 camera. Dated February 22, 2024, this update marks a significant leap forward in the capabilities of DJI’s precision aerial equipment, promising enhanced performance and new features for professional drone users.

Enhanced Performance and Compatibility

The newly released firmware, version 02.00.0001, is designed to be updated through a microSD card or directly via the DJI app, ensuring ease of access for all users. To harness the full potential of this update, it’s essential that related DJI hardware and software components are also up to date. This includes the M350 RTK and M300 RTK aircraft, the DJI RC Plus Remote Controller, and the DJI Pilot 2 App, each requiring specific versions to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

Key Improvements and Fixes for DJI Zenmuse L2

One of the most noteworthy enhancements in this firmware update is the addition of H.265 as the default video encoding format. This change allows users to capture higher-quality video content while conserving storage space, a crucial advantage in professional aerial photography. Furthermore, users have the flexibility to switch the default format in the camera settings, tailoring the device to their specific needs.

The firmware also addresses several technical challenges previously faced by users. The interval for IMU Calibration has been extended to 200 seconds during flight route tasks, improving the stability and reliability of flight operations. Additionally, the update optimizes the Point Cloud LiveView display and reduces point cloud drifting when the aircraft is hovering, enhancing the accuracy of aerial mapping.

Storage optimization is another significant aspect of this update, with improvements made to the storage format of point cloud files. This optimization is designed to reduce the file size of point cloud recordings in certain scenarios, enabling more efficient data management.

Furthermore, DJI has resolved specific issues that impacted user experience. These include corrections to the gimbal connector’s recognition when attached to the left USB-C port and fixes to the app’s behavior during RGB Coloring mode and point cloud recording operations.

Important Notes for Users

Users are advised to ensure that all related firmware and software are updated to their latest versions to enjoy these improvements fully. Additionally, the captured point cloud data with the updated firmware requires DJI Terra v4.0.0 or later for processing, indicating DJI’s commitment to enhancing data analysis and mapping capabilities.

One critical note for users is the irreversible nature of this firmware update. Once updated to version 02.00.0001, it is not possible to revert to version 01.00.0002 or any earlier versions, signifying a permanent step forward in the device’s evolution.

A Step Forward in Aerial Innovation

DJI’s latest firmware update for the Zenmuse L2 camera is a testament to the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and user satisfaction. By addressing key issues and introducing significant improvements, DJI continues to set the standard in aerial photography and mapping technology, ensuring that professionals in the field have access to the most advanced and reliable tools available.
