A celebratory gathering turned dangerous when a CNN-operated drone crashed into a crowd during the Boston Celtics opening night watch party at City Hall Plaza, as reported by Boston 25 News.

The Drone Incident

The drone incident occurred around 7:30 PM on Tuesday night, just as the NBA season was tipping off. Three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the drone reportedly struck a light pole while attempting to navigate between trees before falling into the crowd. The drone operator, identified as a CNN employee, reported to police that the crash occurred when their drone accidentally struck a light pole while attempting to maneuver between two trees.

Multiple Injuries Reported

Derek Scrima, one of the victims, suffered cuts to two fingers from the falling drone.

“I was completely caught off guard, it was scary because my mind was like I could have just got my two fingers cut off,” he told reporters.

Another victim, Yousef Kobeissi, described the frightening moment:

“I hear a loud sound, sounds like a banging sound, suddenly I feel something hit my head… I was initially very scared.”

A third person, a woman, had to be transported from the scene by stretcher.

Official Response

TNT events, who was broadcasting the game, released a statement acknowledging the incident:

“Unfortunately, there was an incident involving a drone and fans attending tonight’s event. On-site medical and safety personnel immediately attended to the situation. We are currently investigating further and wish all involved well.”

DroneXL’s Take

This incident highlights the critical importance of proper drone safety protocols during public events. While drones have become invaluable tools for news gathering and capturing aerial footage at sporting events and public gatherings, this accident underscores the need for strict adherence to safety guidelines and proper operator training. The incident serves as a reminder that even professional operators must maintain constant vigilance and perhaps reassess risk management strategies when flying in crowded urban environments, particularly when navigating around obstacles in densely populated areas.

  1. What will first be investigated by the FAA is if the operator had

    • His Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification
    – A waiver to conduct sustained flight operations over people.
    – A visual observer

You are required to have your remote pilot certification to conduct commercial operations (which this operator was clearly doing on behalf of CNN). Besides civil liability, the operator faces criminal liability as well ( to include jail time and hefty fines). The operator would not even be able to apply for and get a waiver without his remote pilots license.

Open up your pocket book CNN, you are going to pay for this one.
