Multiple Autonomous Drones Successfully Tested in Spanish Urban Airspace
Engineers have achieved a significant milestone in urban drone operations, successfully managing multiple autonomous unmanned aircraft simultaneously over Zaragoza, Spain, as part of the EU’s U-ELCOME program. The trials, led by ATM organization Eurocontrol, mark a crucial step toward implementing U-Space, the EU’s vision for integrating unmanned aircraft into European airspace, according to Aerospace Testing International.
Coordinated Urban Drone Operations
The tests showcased three distinct drone operations working together in shared airspace along the Ebro River. Two drones, operated by the Zaragoza Fire Department and Crisalion Mobility, conducted simulated Search and Rescue operations alongside manned boats. Meanwhile, Bluenest operated a third drone carrying a defibrillator across the river.
“U-Space enables protected, efficient and safe access to airspace for multiple unmanned aircraft through U-Space Service Providers and Common Information Service Providers,” explains Rodrigo Benedit, drone business development engineer at Enaire.
Dynamic Airspace Management Put to the Test
The second phase of testing evaluated Dynamic Airspace Reconfiguration (DAR) protocols during simultaneous drone operations. This included:
- A BVLOS crop monitoring flight by Crisalion
- A line-of-sight medical cargo delivery by Bluenest
- Simulated emergency response requiring immediate airspace clearing
Emergency Response and Medical Applications
The trials demonstrated the potential for drones in emergency response and healthcare delivery.
“This system enables last-mile transport and distribution of medicines using unmanned aerial vehicles to remote and difficult-to-access areas, in adverse weather conditions and emergencies,” says Fernando Castillo, CEO of Novaltia.
DroneXL’s Take
These trials represent a significant step forward in BVLOS operations and urban airspace management. The successful integration of multiple drones for emergency response and medical delivery showcases the growing maturity of Drone Technology in real-world applications. This type of testing is crucial for developing robust frameworks that will enable safe and efficient drone operations in urban environments.
