A Hall County Sheriff’s drone operator located a missing 79-year-old man with dementia and his dog in just 23 seconds using thermal imaging technology, demonstrating the growing importance of drone capabilities in time-critical search and rescue operations. The successful Thanksgiving night rescue occurred after family members reported Eugene Burch and his dog missing from a residence on Southern Trace Drive in Hall County, Georgia, reports 11 Alive.
Lieutenant Dan Franklin, monitoring the situation from home, recognized the urgency when temperatures dropped to around 40°F (4.4°C) with an expected low of 32°F (0°C). The challenging search conditions were compounded by both the man and dog’s hearing impairments, making traditional ground search methods less effective.
The thermal drone deployment proved decisive after initial ground searches yielded no results.
“I recognized the danger of the situation, so I got ready and responded,” said Lt. Franklin, who launched the drone shortly before midnight.
The thermal imaging system quickly detected heat signatures matching a person and dog in the nearby wooded area.
Franklin employed a practical approach to guide ground units, using the drone’s fixed landing lights as a visual reference point.
“I lowered my altitude and turned on my fixed landing lights on the bottom of the drone. Over the radio, I instructed officers to locate the drone in the sky and then make their way to it,” he explained.
This incident adds to the growing body of evidence supporting drone technology’s effectiveness in public safety applications.
Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch emphasized the significance of both technology and personnel: “The seamless teamwork by 1st Lt. Franklin and our Uniform Patrol Division deputies on the ground enabled the positive outcome.”
