Polish Security Forces Neutralize Drone Over Warsaw, Detain Two Belarusians
Poland’s State Protection Service neutralized an unidentified drone flying over central Warsaw near sensitive government buildings and the Belvedere Palace, leading to the detention of two Belarusian nationals, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed on X and in local reports. The incident comes just days after a major Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace triggered NATO’s rapid deployment of additional forces.
The downing underscores Poland’s rising security concerns, as drones increasingly move from front-line battlefields into sensitive airspace above key government sites. The arrests also tie into ongoing tensions with Belarus, where recent espionage-related detentions and expulsions highlight the broader geopolitical backdrop.
Drone Neutralized in Polish Capital
According to Tusk, the “unknown” drone was intercepted over Warsaw while flying near the Belvedere Palace, one of the Polish president’s residences. Local media confirmed that two Belarusian citizens were detained at the scene, and the circumstances surrounding the drone’s flight are the subject of an ongoing police investigation, reports Dutch news outlet NOS.
Poland has ramped up counter-drone defenses in its capital in recent years, but this marks one of the most serious incidents near high-level government facilities in recent memory.
Recent Russian Drone Incursions
The Warsaw incident follows a dramatic escalation on the night of September 9–10, when more than a dozen Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace during wider strikes on Ukraine. NATO scrambled fighters, and Dutch F-35s were credited with downing multiple aircraft in coordination with Polish defenses.
Figures vary, but Polish officials cited incursions ranging from 19 to over 20 drones, calling it one of the largest aerial breaches of NATO airspace since the war in Ukraine began.
NATO Operation Eastern Sentry Expands
In direct response, NATO launched Operation Eastern Sentry, a rapid buildup of both air and ground assets along the alliance’s eastern flank. Reinforcements include UK Royal Air Force Typhoon jets, which will conduct air defense missions over Poland alongside Danish F-16s, French Rafales, and German Eurofighters.
“The UK contribution marks a clear signal that reckless drone incursions into NATO airspace will not go unanswered,” British defense officials stated during their deployment announcement.
Rising Tensions with Belarus
Complicating matters further, Warsaw has taken recent steps against alleged Belarusian intelligence activity. Last week, Polish authorities arrested a suspected Belarusian “agent” and announced the expulsion of a Belarusian diplomat, reports Reuters. These moves suggest that Poland is viewing Belarus not only as a facilitator of migration pressure on the border but also as an active player in espionage and hybrid warfare.
The detention of two Belarusians in Warsaw in connection with today’s drone raises additional questions about whether the event was coincidental or linked to broader operations involving Belarusian actors.
DroneXL’s Take
This latest incident highlights how drones are shifting from tactical use in Ukraine to strategic provocations inside NATO territory. The capture of two foreign nationals tied to the Warsaw downing could signify a cross-border hybrid campaign, especially when seen against recent espionage arrests. The growing involvement of NATO air assets under Operation Eastern Sentry shows just how seriously allies are taking the risk of escalation.
But critical questions remain: Was the Warsaw drone part of surveillance, a probing test of defenses, or something more coordinated? And does the arrest of the Belarusian pair reflect isolated actions or state-backed provocations?

Except they weren’t Belarusian, but a Ukrainian man (who controlled the drone) and a Belarusian woman.
