Sometimes real stories are better than movies. This one starts with a summer vacation in the Mediterranean and ends with a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone rescued by divers. It even includes a super yacht, a suspected jamming incident, a trip to the bottom of the ocean, and a surprise from DJI.
A Superyacht, a Drone Flight, and a Sudden Signal Loss
The story begins in Kalamata, Greece. The redditor Karstenthy was sailing with his wife and some friends. They usually anchored offshore, but this time they pulled into the harbor so the ladies could do some shopping. A simple change of plans set the stage for everything that followed.
Just outside the harbor sat the fourth largest super yacht in the world. The ship is called Blue and is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi. If you love boats, there is no way to ignore a giant like that. The group took photos from the water, but the pilot wanted more. He had a DJI Mini 3 Pro on board, and this was a perfect moment to get some aerial shots.
He launched the drone and captured views of Kalamata, the harbor, and the coastline. Then he turned toward the superyacht. He took one shot and wanted a better angle. The drone stayed around one hundred to one hundred fifty meters up. He kept a respectful distance of several hundred meters. The goal was simply to photograph the yacht, not to spy on anyone.
That is when things went wrong. About four to five hundred meters from the yacht, the controller displayed rapid error messages. First it warned of a lost signal. Then it showed GPS issues. The timing was suspicious. The pilot immediately thought of signal jamming from the yacht. He tried to regain control, but the drone disconnected completely.
A few minutes later, the controller showed the dreaded message that the drone had landed. The only place it could have landed was the ocean. The drone was gone. The vacation continued, but losing a drone that way hurts, especially when it was flown responsibly.
A Message From Poland Changes Everything
Four weeks passed. Then something strange happened. A text message arrived from an unknown number in Poland. The sender explained that he and his wife enjoy diving. During one of their dives, in the middle of the sea, his wife spotted something on the sea floor. It was a drone. Not just any drone. It was the lost DJI Mini 3 Pro.

The drone had the pilot’s phone number written on the bottom. That simple detail saved the entire story. The diver contacted the owner directly. The drone itself was done for, but the memory card survived. The man recovered the card and sent its contents. The pilot opened the files and saw his photos, including the shot of the super yacht. After losing a drone to the sea, getting the footage back is a small miracle.
DJI Steps In With a Final Surprise
The story could have ended there, but it gets even better. Before receiving the message of the divers, the pilot contacted DJI and explained what had happened. DJI reviewed the case and said they did not believe it was pilot error. Instead of leaving him with a total loss, they sent him a replacement drone for free. That surprised him more than anything else. He lost the drone, it sank. Yet DJI still replaced it.
So in the end he got a new drone and all his photos. It is hard to be luckier than that. A lost drone. A diving couple. An unexpected rescue. And DJI customer service that went above and beyond.
DroneXL’s Take
Stories like this show why drone pilots keep flying. The odds of a diver finding a Mini 3 Pro lost near Kalamata are almost zero, yet it happened. It is also a reminder to label your drone. A simple phone number saved this entire adventure. And credit to DJI for standing behind their products. Not every day ends with a drone sinking and the owner still smiling.
