Israel Aerospace Industries pulled the wraps off HYPNOSIS this week, a ground-based air defense system that defeats drones by scrambling the satellite navigation they depend on rather than shooting them down. The state-owned Israeli defense giant describes it as a high-power soft-kill layer that jams and spoofs GNSS signals across multiple frequency bands and constellations at once. No interceptors, no explosions, no ammunition bill. I’ve covered enough counter-drone launches to know that last part is the real story.

Mobile Stations Scramble Satellite Navigation Across A Region

HYPNOSIS works as an array of mobile jamming and spoofing stations wired into a central command and control center, with each unit positioned around a protected site so the network can track and disrupt satellite-guided threats arriving from several directions at the same time. That architecture is the whole pitch.

The two techniques attack the same weakness from different angles. Jamming drowns a drone’s satellite receiver in radio noise until it can no longer hear the real signal. Spoofing is nastier: the station broadcasts counterfeit satellite signals that convince the drone it is somewhere it isn’t, and the flight computer obediently steers the aircraft off target.

IAI’s product datasheet says the system disrupts GNSS across “multiple frequency bands, constellations, and directions” and calls the setup “modular, scalable, fully automatic, remotely controlled.” The company also claims it works against hardened positioning, navigation, and timing gear, though it published no test data to support that.

Guy Barlev, the IAI executive vice president who runs the company’s missiles and space group, said HYPNOSIS “provides a critical and highly effective soft-kill defense layer, enabling nations to address the growing spectrum of GNSS-based aerial threats.” Board chairman Boaz Levy framed it as one more layer in the multi-layered defense doctrine IAI has sold for decades.

The intended customers are the operators of energy infrastructure and other strategic sites that kinetic defenses struggle to cover economically. The Israeli business outlet Calcalist reported that trials showed the system autonomously neutralizing several threats converging on a single target from different directions, without an operator in the loop.

The Cost Math Finally Favors The Defender

Every kinetic intercept spends a missile that costs far more than the drone it kills, which is exactly the trap cheap one-way attack drones were designed to spring, while a jamming station that defeats ten incoming drones costs its owner no more than one that defeats a single drone. Electrons scale. Missiles don’t.

The numbers are brutal. US Army budget documents reportedly price a Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor at roughly $4.2 million per round, while Shahed-136 attack drones are widely estimated at $20,000 to $50,000 apiece. That puts the cost exchange north of 100 to 1 against the defender before a single drone crosses the fence.

I dug into that asymmetry in my March report on Shahed drones hitting the Gulf, when $2,500 interceptor drones were already proving the counter-argument in Ukraine. HYPNOSIS attacks the same problem from the electromagnetic side. A jammer has no magazine to empty and no reload time between engagements.

The timing of the launch is not subtle. Defense News notes the rollout lands amid renewed military confrontation between the United States and Iran and continuing drone exchanges between Russia and Ukraine. The Jerusalem Post adds that GPS disruption has plagued flight corridors and commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz since the Iran conflict began.

A Datasheet That Existed Months Before The Launch Event

IAI’s own marketing file undercuts the framing of HYPNOSIS as a fresh reveal, because the product datasheet hosted on the company’s website carries a November 2025 date code and sits in a March 2026 upload folder, months ahead of this week’s coordinated press rollout. The product came first. The announcement came when the market got hot.

That document also makes the program’s boldest claim: “combat proven Navigation Warfare (NAVWAR) technology.” IAI does not say where that combat happened or against what. Given the documented electronic warfare activity across the region, the inference is easy to draw, but it stays an inference until IAI names the operation.

Here is what stands confirmed across IAI’s materials and independent reporting published between July 17 and July 20: the station-plus-command-center architecture, the jamming and spoofing mission, the autonomy claims, and the pitch as a complement to kinetic interceptors rather than a replacement. IAI says the system slots into existing air defense networks.

Here is what nobody has published: price, effective range, power output, or a single named customer. Barlev described the system to Calcalist as a “cost-efficient” layer, yet the company attached no figure to that efficiency. A soft-kill layer is only as attractive as its coverage footprint and its price tag, and IAI is asking the market to take both on faith.

DroneXL’s Take

HYPNOSIS is IAI packaging a condition the region already lives under: wide-area GNSS denial, the same electronic fog that airline crews and ship captains around the Strait of Hormuz have been cursing for months. What’s new here is the productization, a branded system with a command center that an allied government can write a check for.

The industry pattern is what interests me most. In June I covered Niantic and Vantor teaching military drones to navigate by sight precisely because satellite navigation can no longer be trusted in a war zone. Read the two stories together and you see the whole arms race in miniature: one side of this industry sells GNSS denial while the other side sells GNSS independence.

That is also the hard limit of HYPNOSIS. Jamming and spoofing only defeat an aircraft that still trusts its satellite receiver, and the visual navigation work I reported in June exists because militaries are already engineering that trust out of their drones.

Whether soft-kill systems keep their edge as visual and inertial navigation spread through attack drones is an open question, not a prediction. IAI clearly believes there are enough satellite-dependent threats in the sky to sell against for years. Nothing published this week tells us the price of being wrong.
