GoPro opened pre-orders Wednesday for the MISSION 1 PRO ILS, an 8K cinema camera with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount that weighs 197 grams (6.95 ounces) and sells for $699.99, or $599.99 for existing GoPro subscribers. Pre-order units ship next week and retail availability starts globally in September.

The weight is the number that matters here. A RED Komodo brain, the camera at the center of both custom cinelifter builds DroneXL covered this year, weighs 2.10 pounds (950 grams) before a lens or a battery goes on it. The ILS body is roughly a fifth of that and accepts the same category of glass.

GoPro put the constraint in an endnote instead of the headline. The camera has no electronic contacts, so focus and aperture are manual on every lens, every time.

The 197-Gram Body Changes The Payload Math For FPV Cinelifters

A cinelifter exists because a cinema camera is heavy. Svanur, the Iceland-based FPV pilot DroneXL covered in April, flies a custom 11-inch quad on 6S packs that manages five to seven minutes of flight while hauling a RED Komodo. The ILS weighs a fifth as much.

That five-to-seven-minute window is the whole cost of carrying a cinema sensor, and it comes with no return-to-home and nothing in software to stop a crash. We laid the trade out in full in April’s Iceland shootout between a DJI Avata 2 and a $15,000 Komodo cinelifter, and Northside’s Komodo flight over the Matterhorn is the version where the footage justifies the rig.

The ILS does not remove that trade. It moves it. GoPro’s launch post puts the body at 197 grams and calls the camera “the world’s smallest, most rugged cinema camera.” The 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery is rated for over three hours of continuous 4K30 recording, which means the aircraft sets the shot length, not the camera.

What GoPro has not published is a combined weight for the camera with any lens attached. Venus Optics loaned seven Laowa MFT lenses to reviewers ahead of launch, from a 4mm circular fisheye to a 50mm macro cine, and the announcement lists focal lengths and angles of view for all of them without a single gram figure. For anyone budgeting a payload, that is the only number that decides which airframe this flies on.

GoPro Removed The Electronic Contacts, So Every Lens Is Manual

The MISSION 1 PRO ILS has no electronic contacts in its lens mount, which rules out autofocus entirely. GoPro’s endnote limits compatibility to Micro Four Thirds lenses that cover a 1-inch or larger sensor with manual focus and either a fixed aperture no greater than f/4.5 or a manual aperture ring.

Adapters open the mount up to vintage glass, PL mount cinema lenses and other specialty optics, which is the real reason to want this camera. GoPro’s answer to focus is on the rear screen: Focus Assist magnifies up to 8x to verify focus before recording, and Focus Peaking overlays a contrasting color on whatever is sharp, with a High Sensitivity mode for low-contrast scenes.

On a handheld rig, that is a workable process. On an aircraft doing 40 mph, pulling focus is not a thing that happens.

The free MISSION Monitor app, out the same day on the Apple App Store and requiring iOS 18 or later, pushes the same tools to an iPhone or iPad along with zebras, a real-time LUT preview for GP-Log2, framing overlays, and record control.

HyperSmooth Support Narrows To Five Profiled Fisheye Lenses

In-camera stabilization does not work with everything. GoPro lists five specifically profiled fisheye lenses, the Laowa 4mm f/2.8, 7Artisans 6mm f/2, 7Artisans 7.5mm f/2.8, Brightin Star 7.5mm f/2.8 and Meike 7.5mm f/2.8, plus rectilinear MFT lenses from 6mm to 500mm. Testing stopped at 50mm.

Anything longer, by GoPro’s own account, may perform inconsistently. That matters more for aerial work than for a car rig, because HyperSmooth is the feature that let naked GoPros replace gimbals on FPV aircraft in the first place. Fly a 17mm prime and you are inside the guaranteed envelope. Fly a 100mm and you are testing it yourself.

GoPro Set The ILS $100 Above What DroneXL’s June Review Described

The launch price is $699.99. When DroneXL published DC Rainmaker’s Mission 1 Pro review on June 1, it described the ILS as costing the same as the Mission 1 Pro, which starts at $599, and GoPro’s subscriber price now matches that figure exactly.

Timing held. Shawn at Air Photography reported in our April coverage of the Mission 1 announcement that the interchangeable-lens model was slated for Q3, and September is Q3.

The rest of the spec sheet is the Mission 1 Pro’s: the same 50MP 1-inch sensor and the GP3 processor DroneXL detailed in March, 8K60, 4K240 and 1440p480 capture, Open Gate up to 8K30, a 10-second 1080p960 burst slow-motion mode, 10-bit GP-Log2 at up to 240Mbps, timecode sync, a four-microphone array with 32-bit float audio to a separate .wav file, 50MP stills and 44MP frame grabs. The standard Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro are $100 off for a limited time.

DroneXL’s Take

The last time GoPro built a camera aimed squarely at drones, it was the Hero10 Black Bones in April 2022: 54 grams, no housing, powered straight off the flight pack through a standard FPV connector. GoPro understood exactly what an aircraft needed.

The ILS is not that camera. It has a battery, a screen, a weatherproof body, and nothing that plugs into a flight pack. GoPro built a compact cinema camera and left the drone people to notice on their own.

They will. Back in April, closing out that Iceland piece, we argued the cinelifter would keep winning until somebody built a pro FPV platform that takes interchangeable lenses. That was aimed at DJI. GoPro has answered the payload half of it instead of the airframe half, and at $699.99 the answer is roughly a tenth of a Komodo brain.

Manual focus is a real problem and I won’t talk around it. On a moving aircraft you set focus on the ground, pick a hyperfocal distance and live with it. That is also exactly how naked-GoPro FPV work has always been done, and it is exactly why nobody flies a Komodo for a quick sunset lap. The constraint lands on the shots that were never the point.

Retail availability starts in September. That is when we find out whether builders actually rig these, or whether the ILS settles where our June review put it, as a camera for productions that want to bolt hundreds of identical bodies to a set. My money is on both happening. A $699.99 body with a real lens mount is cheap enough that somebody is going to crash one to find out, and that is how every useful FPV camera got adopted, starting with the Bones.
