Best DJI Action Camera: Osmo Nano vs Action 6 vs Osmo 360 Compared

The short answer: buy the Osmo Action 6 if you want one camera that does everything well, from 8K footage to night streets to Alaskan winters. Buy the Osmo Nano if you mostly want POV footage from a camera light enough to wear. Buy the Osmo 360 if you would rather capture everything around you and choose the framing afterward.

How to choose: one question before any spec sheet

Decide what you want the footage to look like before you compare a single number, because these three cameras produce three different kinds of video. The Nano makes wearable POV shots, the Action 6 makes the highest-quality traditional action footage, and the Osmo 360 makes spherical captures you frame in post. Specs only matter after that choice.

DJI Osmo Nano: the POV specialist

The Nano is the camera you buy to stop thinking about carrying a camera. It is by far the smallest of the three, especially once you separate the two units: the camera module films on its own at 4K/60, or 4K/120 in slow motion, in horizontal or vertical depending on how you orient it, and takes photos up to 35 megapixels. On its own the module is waterproof to 10 meters; clip on the screen unit and the combined package is only splash resistant, so keep the full assembly out of the water.

The magnet is the point. Jake wears the module on a lanyard for POV shots while adventuring, sticks it to ferrous surfaces including cars and shelves for behind-the-scenes angles, and parks it on top of his mirrorless camera to capture POV while photographing wildlife in Alaska. Because it mounts almost anywhere, it also earns odd, creative placements no full-size camera fits into. Storage and power both work differently than on a normal action camera. You pick a 64 GB or 128 GB version at purchase, which sets the price tier, and a microSD slot in the module extends either one. The battery is fixed inside the module and charges automatically every time you attach the screen unit, which doubles as your preview monitor along with the Mimo app on your phone.

Runtime reflects that design: about 90 minutes on the module by itself, depending on frame rate, and up to about 200 minutes if you keep reattaching the screen between clips. Where the Nano struggles: heat

A lot of electronics in a very small package means the Nano can overheat in warm climates, and the honest fix is shooting the way the camera is built to shoot. Jake rarely hits the limit because Alaska rarely gets hot, and because his POV clips run one to three minutes rather than continuous takes. If you live somewhere warm and want long, unattended recordings, this is the spec sheet telling you to buy the Action 6 instead.

DJI Osmo Action 6: the do-everything pick

The Action 6 is much more than a bigger Nano, and the footage is the biggest reason. It records up to 8K at 30 frames per second, plus 4K/60 and 4K/120, from a 1/1.1-inch square sensor behind the first variable aperture in an action camera, f/2.0 to f/4.0. That square sensor feeds a 1x1 mode that pulls both horizontal and vertical framing out of one shot, and subject tracking works at up to 2.7K when you want motion in the frame.

The body earns the price gap too. The battery pops out and swaps, with up to 240 minutes of runtime per charge. There is 50 GB of internal storage plus a microSD slot. It survives 20 meters underwater with no case at all, deeper with the optional dive case, and carries a front touchscreen alongside the rear one so you control it from either side.

In Jake’s use it has become the walk-and-talk vlogging camera, day or night, because the bigger sensor buys real low-light performance and more dynamic range than the Nano. Walking city streets after dark is Action 6 territory. It flies on FPV drones as well, with footage clean enough to stabilize in post with Gyroflow. And the durability cuts both ways on the thermometer: better heat tolerance than the Nano in warm weather, and no freezing failures through ridiculously cold Alaskan shoots.

The Action 6’s macro trick

Screw-on wide and macro lenses give the Action 6 a range no other camera here has. Jake shoots with the macro lens, and glacier ice that reads as a blue wall to the naked eye turns into clear, detailed close-up texture through it. An action camera that also does macro work is a genuinely different tool, and it is part of why the Action 6 reads as the most versatile camera of the three rather than simply the highest-resolution one.

DJI Osmo 360: film first, frame later

The Osmo 360 is a different instrument entirely: it records everything around the camera as a complete sphere, in 8K at up to 50 frames per second, and you pull a 4K frame out of it in post. That workflow is the trade. You never miss a shot because the camera was pointed the wrong way, and you accept an extra reframing step in the edit plus footage that never looks exactly like a standard action camera’s.

The shots you get in return justify the workflow. On a selfie stick the stick itself disappears from the footage, which produces angles that read like drone shots or a follow camera, and you can set the camera down somewhere and have it track you in post. Behind-the-scenes coverage, camera positions nothing else fits, and one capture that exports both a 16:9 YouTube edit and a 9:16 vertical for Shorts or Reels, even multiple different framings from the same file: that is the 360 argument.

Two modes soften the learning curve. Selfie mode frames you automatically so no reframing is needed afterward, and single-lens mode shoots through just the front or rear lens, turning it into something much closer to a traditional action camera. Photos reach 120 megapixels as a full sphere, though unless you publish VR content you will reframe those too and end up with a far smaller final image. Removable batteries, 107 GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot round it out, and the IP68-rated body is waterproof to 10 meters (33 feet) with no case needed.

What all three cameras share

Color, audio, and mounting work the same across the lineup, which is DJI’s quiet advantage over mixing brands. All three shoot a 10-bit normal color profile that most people should simply use, and all three offer 10-bit D-Log M when you need maximum dynamic range or footage that grades to match your other cameras.

All three also speak OsmoAudio, DJI’s direct microphone connection: pair a Mic 2, Mic Mini, or Mic 3 straight to the camera, no receiver, and get clean audio from you and one other person even in wind and noise. The Action 6 and Osmo 360 use the same removable batteries, so adding the second camera to your kit costs nothing in spare-battery logistics; the Nano sits out that party with its fixed internal cell. And every camera here clicks into the same quick-release magnetic mount system, so one set of mounts serves whichever you buy first and whichever you add later.
