A DJI Phantom drone was used to measure the cellphone coverage of Lordship and Templetown in Ireland. The aerial survey was performed by Get Connected, which was contacted by local Fine Gael councilor John Reilly.

“The drone has collected data on the area,” he said, according to The Independent. “Get Connected has taken measurements from the drone and will collect evidence from this survey. This will result in the installation of booster poles in the Cooley peninsula. These booster poles will enhance the mobile signal and will alleviate any poor reception over a large part of the peninsula. This technology has been used in other counties that mountains which tends to interfere with mobile coverage.”

Cllr. Reilly reports that he has received a number of phone calls and texts from constituents who are dissatisfied with the mobile coverage in other areas. As a result, he plans to conduct yet another survey in the near future to look into the matter.

It was at his request that a survey using a drone be conducted in the Tankardsrock neighborhood of Kilkerley.

In the past, we have witnessed the use of drones to establish temporary coverage in order to make it possible for people to use their cell phones. Today, we learned that drones such as the DJI Phantom are also being used to measure and inspect the coverage and networks currently in place for mobile phone service.
