Wing’s Innovative “Pill” Hook Revolutionizes Drone Delivery Stability
Wing, Alphabet’s drone delivery subsidiary, has developed a groundbreaking “pill” hook design that’s transforming the stability and efficiency of aerial package delivery. This innovative component, as revealed in a recent video, addresses one of the key challenges in drone delivery: keeping packages steady during flight and drop-off.
Engineering Marvel in the Sky
The pill hook is a marvel of aerodynamic engineering. Its design incorporates carefully placed holes and a specific shape that work together to provide remarkable stability, even at Wing’s impressive cruising speed of 70 mph.
“A lot of magic is happening with this pill,” explains a Wing engineer in the video. “Only versions of the building have holes when we test them in the tunnel wrecking ball.”
Military-Inspired Stability
Interestingly, the design draws inspiration from an unexpected source: military aircraft refueling probes. These devices maintain stability at speeds exceeding 500 mph, a principle Wing has adapted for its delivery drones.
“I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a refueling fighter jet. They use these fuel drives devices at like 500 miles an hour plus they just sit there in the air stable,” the engineer notes. “We were able to do this so if you’re going 70 miles an hour and that is due to these holes and also the shape of the design.”
Precision Delivery Process
During delivery, the drone lowers the package on a tether while maintaining a safe distance above ground. The pill’s aerodynamics prevent swinging and ensure a smooth descent. Once the package is delivered, the pill smoothly retracts without snagging on the drone’s components.
“You don’t wanna win a swing because what happens is you have a swing like this in the short gets more swing,” the engineer explains. “We do not win all the way up a little bit. That’s a safe distance, and then we start climbing out of the zone on the way go from you in a very stable state.”
The Devil in the Details
Every aspect of the pill’s design serves a purpose. The size, shape, and location of each hole are precisely calculated to maximize stability and minimize potential issues during flight and delivery.
“Every little hole in there is size specifically to give the stability it behaves like a drag parachute and it’s super stable,” the engineer emphasizes.
DroneXL’s Take
Wing’s innovative pill hook design represents a significant leap forward in drone delivery technology. By solving the stability issue, Wing has addressed one of the major hurdles in making drone delivery a viable, everyday service. This development aligns with recent advancements in drone delivery systems, such as Wing’s curbside pickup model, which aims to integrate drone delivery seamlessly into existing retail infrastructures.
The military-inspired design also highlights the potential for cross-industry innovation in the drone sector. As drone technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more creative solutions that draw from diverse fields to overcome the unique challenges of aerial logistics.
