Since Google Street View is lacking on the beautiful island of Mauritius, roughly about 1,200 miles east of Africa, one drone operator took it upon himself to create his own Aerial Google Street View using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone.

Mauritian resident, Reuben Pillay took it upon himself to create an aerial version of Google Street View of the island’s entire coastline and more. It took him a year and a half to complete the massive project with his DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone.

“I have used Google Street View before, but it’s not available for my little island — the Google street car never made it here,” Pillay told PetaPixel. “All we have on Google Earth is images from a lot of different people and the general quality isn’t necessarily good […]

“I wanted to create something with much better uniform quality. A place where you’d get decent images every time you’d click and a way for people to leave memories they’ve had at these places.”

After shooting the images with his drone he would stitch the aerial photos together to create the 360-degree images of each location. Reportedly, it took Reuben about 10 hours to stitch each photo together. A modern DJI Mavic Air 2 with its pano function could have saved Reuben a ton of time for maybe not even that much loss in quality. Either way, it’s an impressive project for sure and a great way to discover the island.

“All I want for now is that people discover my island,” Pillay says, “and hopeful that’ll bring tourists over here once we re-open our airspace and this COVID situation is out of the way…”
