The island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean is a very popular destination of exotic weddings and honeymoons. And as the drone market matured a group of drone operators developed offering their aerial photography services to document the parties. Now, these wedding drone photographers are helping to coordinate the massive, volunteer-driven oil spill clean up on this paradise island.
Wedding drone photographers in Mauritius help coordinate oil spill clean up
As Mauritius is facing its worst ecological disaster with the massive oil spill in one of their most pristine lagoons, the wedding drone photographers have organized themselves to help coordinate the cleanup activities.
On July 25, the Japanese oil tanker MV Wakashio ran around on the largest barrier reef about one mile off the coast of Mauritius. The ship dragged along the reef for at least half a mile before it started leaking oil on August 6th. What started out as small cracks have now resulted in the ship breaking in two as of August 15.
Mauritius does not have its own Air Force or Navy and instead relies on its police force and National Coastguard airplanes and helicopters to provide up-to-date aerial footage of the situation.
The local wedding drones photographers, however, have shown to be invaluable in helping to coordinate the volunteer clean up activities. With their knowledge of the local wind conditions and their assortment of unmanned aerial systems, the drone pilots are able to point to areas where the black, filmy residue of the oil spill may be heading and help coordinate the volunteer clean up activities, reports Forbes.
