A drone points lifeguards to a swimmer in distress off the Famara Beach. The swimmer was not easily visible from the beach, but the drone with its aerial perspective was able to locate the person in need quickly and sending both the lifeguards and a number of surfers to his rescue.

The lifeguard and rescue organization said on Facebook that:

New technologies at the service of emergencies. Yesterday we were required by the SUC regarding a swimmer in distress on Famara Beach. Apparently the alert was given by two young people who met a struggling swimmer behind the breaking waves, and who had unsuccessfully tried to go back to the beach on several occasions. Local surfers accompanied by two EMERLAN rescuers performed the rescue.
Finally and guided by our NGO’s Drone, they make it all ashore together.

DroneXL’s take

In recent years we have seen more drones used in the rescue of swimmers and surfers. Unmanned aircraft can help to keep beachgoers safe by monitoring the waters for sharks and other predators, spotting surfers, and swimmers in need, or by dropping floatation devices in the water near a swimmer in distress.
