Two versions of DJI Mavic 3 telephoto lens offer nearly same resolution

Earlier this month, OsitaLV posted two photos on Twitter showing two versions of the telephoto lens. When looking closely at the telephoto lens of the drone, it becomes clear that one of them had a more oval or narrow lens opening. The other drone (left) had a perfectly round lens opening.

“Your Mavic 3 may look different, check your telephoto camera. Can't tell the influence yet,” OsitaLV said.

One week later, he posted another message saying:

“Rumor says the telephoto camera with oval diaphragm (pic on the right) has slightly higher resolution. Is that true? I invited friends to run some tests with ISO12233 test chart, results will be released soon.”

The ISO 12233 test chart refers to an ISO standard for measuring the resolution of ‘electronic still imaging', according to Cornell University.

No discernable difference between DJI Mavic 3 telephoto lens

OsitaLV has since published the findings of their test and said the following:

Well, after resolution test, the results in MTF50 as follows. (higher is better)

Oval diaphragm Mavic 3
horizontal 0.351cy/pxl
vertical 0.291cy/pxl

Circle diaphragm Mavic 3
horizontal 0.365cy/pxl
vertical 0.292cy/pxl

It was so close, but we found the circle one has wider FOV.

0.351cy/pxl refers to cycles per pixel (C/P) and is a spatial frequency unit, which serves as an indication of how well each pixel is utilized.

Since the numbers between the two versions of DJI Mavic 3 drones are so similar, you would hardly notice any difference in resolution.

OsitaLV did say that the DJI Mavic 3 with the rounder opening has a slightly wider field of view. He did not say by how much though.

I just got my replacement drone today from DJI and came across this article. I got the same oval lens. I have one with the round lens and this second one with the oval lens. It’s too bad that i already have dji care on my first mavic 3 otherwise I’d keep this oval one. Going to sell the oval lens mavic 3. There must have been a reason it was updated right? I’m in the Los Angeles county area.
