FAA Production Certificate for Matternet M2 drone delivery system

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Production Certificate to Matternet for its M2 delivery drone.

In September, Matternet, which is based in Mountain View, , received an FAA standard Type Certification for its Matternet M2 delivery drone, a first of its kind for an unmanned aircraft.

The FAA Production Certificate attests to Matternet’s development of a quality management system and manufacturing competence to create delivery drones that adhere to the Type Design that has been authorized.

The Production Certificate allows Matternet to continue producing, testing, and issuing airworthiness certifications for its Matternet M2 delivery drones. The unmanned aircraft will be manufactured in Mountain View, California.

“Receiving an FAA Production Certificate is yet another milestone establishing Matternet as the first – and currently only – company able to produce certified delivery drone systems in the ,” said Andreas Raptopoulos, founder and CEO of Matternet. “The aircraft produced under this Certificate will be the very ones that lead a transformation of how we deliver time-sensitive materials, especially in critical industries like health care.”

In the United States, Matternet is focused on growing its drone delivery operations within the health sector, where unmanned delivery offers significant benefits.

The Matternet drone delivery system, for example, may allow the rapid, on-demand, and routine transportation of biological lab samples to off-site testing facilities. Immediate and rapid delivery of test results allows healthcare practitioners to provide answers to patients more quickly.

Matternet has also been among a small group of firms supplying aircraft and support technologies for on-demand air carrier operations for the last four years, thanks to an exemption granted under the FAA’s framework for revenue on-demand air carrier operations. This enabled carriers to run drone networks while these technologies were being tested.

Matternet is the first company in the United States to have a certified and in-production aircraft that has been judged airworthy and appropriate for commercial delivery operations, with both Type Certification and a Production Certificate.

Matternet anticipates that the first M2 drones manufactured under this Production Certificate will enter service in December 2022.
