In an exclusive interview with Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, Deputy Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, we delve into the groundbreaking establishment of the Drone Forces, a new military branch that is revolutionizing modern warfare. As the conflict with Russia intensifies, Ukraine’s innovative approach to leveraging unmanned systems has become a crucial factor in leveling the playing field against a numerically superior adversary.

The Birth of a New Military Branch

The creation of the Drone Forces marks a pivotal moment in military history, comparable to the formation of the Air Force at the dawn of the 20th century. “Today, we’re building units around the kind of fifth generation warfare that science fiction writers love to explore, like androids and terminators,” Sukharevskyi explains. “What was science fiction back then is actually what we’re working with now.”

Ukraine’s decision to establish a dedicated branch for unmanned systems is a testament to their commitment to innovation and adaptability in the face of evolving threats. “The world is watching us as an example of how to be decisive and innovative in warfare,” Sukharevskyi emphasizes. “These exact qualities allow us to respond effectively, even when facing an enemy with superior numbers.”

The Indispensable Role of Drones

In the current conflict, drones have become an integral part of Ukraine’s military operations. “Now, in 2024, we barely fire a shot without having a drone in the air first,” Sukharevskyi reveals. Beyond targeting and fire adjustment, drones have transformed into loitering munitions, offering a cost-effective and precise alternative to traditional artillery shells and mines.

The effectiveness of Ukraine’s drone tactics has not gone unnoticed by their adversary. “The Russians are known for copying our tactics on a large scale,” Sukharevskyi notes. However, he stresses the importance of systemization and the development of a unified tactical doctrine to maximize results across the entire front, which stretches over 620 miles (1,000 kilometers).

The Technological Arms Race

The escalating use of drones has sparked a technological arms race reminiscent of the Cold War era. “Each side reacts to the other’s innovations,” Sukharevskyi explains. “We developed effective drones, they ramped up electronic warfare, and we counter that by improving our drones.”

This rapid cycle of innovation and reaction presents a significant challenge for Ukraine’s Drone Forces. Sukharevskyi hints at the development of fiber optic-based solutions to circumvent electronic warfare, showcasing the ingenuity and adaptability of Ukraine’s military engineers.

The Future of Naval Drone Warfare

Ukraine’s success in defeating one of the largest fleets in the Black Sea, despite lacking a traditional navy, underscores the potential of naval drone warfare. Sukharevskyi emphasizes the need for a systematic approach to maritime defense, with unmanned systems playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety of Ukraine’s coastal waters.

“Everyone knows about our offensive capabilities, but that’s not everything,” Sukharevskyi hints. “Russian ships are feeling the effect as well.” The development of universal platforms capable of launching torpedoes or man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) opens up new possibilities for naval drone warfare.

The Robot Army

As the conflict progresses, Ukraine is increasingly turning to robotic platforms to compensate for their numerical disadvantage against Russian forces. “As long as I live, the ultimate goal of technology and unmanned systems is to distance our soldiers from the battlefield as much as possible,” Sukharevskyi passionately explains. “There is no higher value than life, and no sacrifice too great when it comes to saving a soldier’s life.”

While Russia has begun to develop similar technologies, Sukharevskyi notes that they are primarily copying what they observe on the battlefield. The challenges of training troops on these advanced systems and the logistical hurdles of mass production remain significant obstacles for both sides.

As Ukraine continues to face the evolving threats posed by Russian aggression, the Drone Forces stand at the forefront of 21st-century warfare. Through innovation, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to protecting the lives of their soldiers, Ukraine is setting a new standard for modern military operations.

Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi’s insights reveal the complex realities of the ongoing conflict and the critical role that unmanned systems play in shaping its outcome. As the world watches, Ukraine’s Drone Forces serve as a powerful example of how technology and ingenuity can level the playing field, even against a formidable adversary.
