Fastest Quadcopter Smashes Guinness Speed Record

Last year, a mechanical engineer set a Guinness World Record for the fastest battery-powered RC quadcopter at 224 mph. That record has now been obliterated by a custom-made drone, Peregreen 2, hitting nearly 300 mph. This incredible feat was achieved by Luke , an aerial videographer and photographer from Cape Town, . The drone reached a verified speed of 298.47 mph, setting a new world record.

The Peregreen 2: A Record-Breaking Drone

Luke Bell and his father, Mike Bell, have been at the forefront of drone innovation. The Peregreen, their earlier quadcopter, already surpassed previous records with a speed of 247 mph. However, the Peregreen 2, their latest creation, pushed boundaries further by clocking an average speed of 298.47 mph over four runs. This speed has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records.

Building the World’s Fastest Drone

Creating the Peregreen 2 was no easy task. The Bells faced numerous challenges, including technical issues and frequent fires. These setbacks necessitated a complete redesign of the drone. Despite these obstacles, their perseverance paid off. After rigorous aero tests and a successful fire-free test flight, the Peregreen 2 was ready to soar.

The final build of the Peregreen 2 boasts a carbon-fiber frame and a 3D-printed outer shell/tail. It is equipped with APC 7x11E props, T-Motor Velox 3115 900KV motors, APD 120A 12S ESCs, two 1,800-mAh LiPo battery packs, a Matek F405-HDTE flight controller, and a Matek HCS-150 current sensor. This powerful combination allowed the drone to accelerate from 0 to 186 mph in just two seconds, achieving a top speed of 317 mph.

Capturing the Record Flight

The record-breaking flight was documented with an Insta 360 Go 3 action cam mounted in the transparent nose of the drone. Luke Bell piloted the drone using FPV goggles and a handheld controller, ensuring precise control and capturing every thrilling moment.

“We threw down the gauntlet after the previous world record, and we’re doing it again โ€“ over to you, rest of the drone world โ€“ can you beat that?” Bell challenges.

DroneXL’s Take

The Peregreen 2’s achievement is a significant milestone in , showcasing the incredible potential and innovation within the field. This record-breaking speed not only highlights the capabilities of modern drones but also pushes the boundaries for future advancements. The dedication and ingenuity displayed by Luke and Mike Bell are truly inspiring, setting a high bar for drone enthusiasts and engineers worldwide. The quest for speed continues, and the drone community eagerly anticipates who will take on Bell’s challenge next.
