A groundbreaking achievement in aerial drone defense has earned USAF Captain Lacie Hester the Silver Star, making her the first woman in Air Force history to receive this prestigious award, according to Forces News.
Historic Air Defense Operation
During a massive attack on April 13-14, Capt. Hester and her F-15E Strike Eagle pilot, Major Benjamin Coffey, faced down over 300 Iranian and Houthi-launched drones and missiles targeting Israel.
“We all fell into an execution rhythm: call, shoot and confirm the target was destroyed before we moved on to the next task,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Causey, commander of the 494th Fighter Squadron.
Record-Breaking Drone Engagement
The operation marked the largest air-to-air engagement since Vietnam, with F-15E Strike Eagles from RAF Lakenheath and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base intercepting more than 80 one-way attack drones. The coalition forces achieved a remarkable 99% success rate in neutralizing incoming threats.
Leadership Under Pressure
Despite facing aircraft emergencies and hostile fire, Capt. Hester demonstrated exceptional skill as an airborne mission commander, coordinating coalition air assets while actively engaging enemy drones.
Master Sergeant Timothy Adams, who received a Bronze Star for his ground leadership, emphasized the intense focus required: “People, mission. People, mission. That’s all that was in my head.”
