DJI Matrice 30T Enhances Washington Township Police Emergency Response

Township Department, has acquired a DJI Matrice 30T drone for emergency response and search-and-rescue operations, with funding of $17,000 provided primarily through the Washington Township Police Officers Association, according to Chief Michael Thompson.

The department’s new M30T features a thermal imaging camera for heat detection in challenging conditions, coupled with a 200x zoom lens that allows officers to maintain distance while monitoring situations. Additional smart capabilities include automated search patterns and object tracking features to streamline emergency operations.

Officer Brian Jones leads the department’s drone operations, with Officers Chuck Wirick, Logan Miller, and Logan Brown currently pursuing certification as drone pilots. This staffing approach aims to ensure consistent drone availability for emergency situations.

“Having a drone with these capabilities is important for officer and public safety,” Chief Thompson noted. “If we have a missing person, this tool will let us search large areas in just a few minutes.”

The department is also exploring software applications that could assist with traffic accident investigations, particularly in cases involving serious injuries or fatalities. While the drone represents a significant investment, department leadership views it as worthwhile if it helps locate even one person in danger.

The new drone system enhances the department’s emergency response capabilities, providing officers with advanced tools for search-and-rescue operations and public safety missions, explains Peak of Ohio.
