Grid Aero Unveils Lifter-Lite Cargo Drone with U.S. Air Force Backing

Aerospace startup Grid Aero has emerged from stealth mode with a bold entry into the defense drone sector: the Lifter-Lite, a long-range cargo drone designed to fly thousands of miles with heavy payloads. Backed by a fresh $6 million seed round and a U.S. Air Force contract, the company aims to redefine how militaries move equipment in contested logistics environments, according to a report from Axios.

A “Pickup Truck of the Skies”

Grid Aero’s CEO, Arthur Dubois, describes the Lifter-Lite as “the pickup truck of the skies,” engineered in just six months by a small team of about 14 employees with backgrounds at Joby Aviation, Northrop Grumman, and Xwing. The drone is built around simplicity and scalability.

“This first aircraft is built for scalability. It is, really, like an Ikea kit that you assemble,” Dubois said. “It doesn’t require any specific tooling. It’s super simple.”

The Lifter-Lite cannot transport personnel or large vehicles, but it is designed to carry thousands of pounds over “thousands of miles,” making it suitable for moving supplies, ammunition, or equipment where traditional transport aircraft may be unavailable or at risk.

Designed for Contested Logistics

The Pentagon has increasingly emphasized the challenge of contested logistics, where adversaries may disrupt or endanger supply chains in a high-intensity conflict. Dubois noted the strategic need for alternatives.

“If we run out of C-130s, or we run out of these cargo aircraft, the whole machine can grind to a halt. And we’re not talking just the Air Force; it’s across services,” Dubois said. “Given that we’re prepping for a near-peer fight, that’s a problem.”

The large unmanned cargo drone format offers a modular, scalable solution that could help supplement or replace traditional systems in situations where larger aircraft are either overstretched or too vulnerable.

Backing and Upcoming Tests

Grid Aero secured $6 million in seed funding from Calibrate Ventures and Ubiquity Ventures, providing the financial runway to advance development. The startup also landed a contract with AFWERX, the Air Force’s innovation arm, signaling strong Department of Defense interest in unmanned logistics platforms.

The prototype Lifter-Lite is scheduled for ground testing in late September, marking the next step toward proving its operational capabilities.
