DJI Action 5 Pro’s New Firmware Locks Down Your Privacy
In the world of tech, it’s often the small, thoughtful updates that make the biggest difference in our daily lives. DJI just rolled out a new firmware update for its Action 5 Pro camera, and it includes one simple, brilliant feature that every creator and drone pilot should be excited about: a password lock.
It might not sound as flashy as a new sensor or a longer flight time, but in an age where data security is everything, this is a massive win for creators. It’s a simple layer of security that brings some much-needed peace of mind to anyone who takes their gear out into the real world.
Your Footage is Now Under Lock and Key
Here’s how it works. The new firmware (version 1.05.03.20) adds a password protection option that kicks in when you power on the camera. You set a password, and from then on, no one can access the camera’s functions or, more importantly, its stored footage without entering it.
Think about it. We carry these powerful little cameras with us everywhere—on bumpy mountain bike trails, through crowded city streets, or strapped to the side of a drone flying over a remote landscape. The chances of a camera getting lost, dropped, or even stolen are very real. Before this update, if that happened, your SD card and all its precious, private footage were completely exposed.
Now, with this simple lock, your 4K clips and 40-megapixel photos are secure. For a professional who might have confidential client footage on that card, or a traveler who has just captured once-in-a-lifetime memories, that security is priceless.
A Small Update for a Powerful Camera
This new security feature is the cherry on top for what is already a beast of an action camera. The Action 5 Pro is a creator’s dream, packing a large 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K/120fps video capability, and a battery that can last up to four hours, all into a tiny, rugged frame. Paired with DJI’s excellent wireless microphones, it’s a complete, professional-grade filmmaking toolkit.
Getting the new update is a breeze. For anyone with the DJI Mimo app on their phone, the update will pop up automatically. You can also grab it manually from DJI’s official website. It’s a quick, easy install that adds a whole new level of security to your workflow.
Why This is a Bigger Deal Than You Think
This isn’t just about protecting your vacation videos. It’s a sign that DJI is taking data security seriously across its entire product ecosystem. In a world where we hear stories about drones being used to spy or getting into legal trouble, the ability to secure the data on our devices is becoming critically important.
A simple password lock is a powerful statement. It gives the user, whether they’re a professional journalist or a weekend hobbyist, full control over their own creative work. It’s a small but significant step in building trust and empowering the creator. It’s a feature that I and many other pilots have been hoping to see on DJI’s drones for years, and its appearance on the Action 5 Pro is a very promising sign.
DroneXL’s Take
I take my cameras and drones into all sorts of unpredictable situations. The thought of losing a camera with a full day’s worth of client footage on it is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night. That’s why this small firmware update feels like such a huge relief. It’s a simple, common-sense feature that shows DJI is listening to the needs of professional creators.
“Real talk,” a password is not an impenetrable fortress. A determined hacker could probably still get to the data if they had physical possession of the camera. But it’s a powerful deterrent. It stops the casual thief or the curious person who finds your lost gear from immediately accessing all your files. For 99% of situations, that’s more than enough.
My only hope now is that this is the first step. I would love to see this exact feature, and perhaps even more advanced security like biometric locks or full-disk encryption, become standard on all of DJI’s drones. The ability to lock down my Mavic 3’s SD card with a password would be a dream come true.
For now, this is a big win. It’s a sign that our tools are maturing, becoming not just more powerful, but more responsible. If you have an Action 5 Pro, go download that update. Your future self might thank you for it.
