Police Drone Tracks Down Suspect Who Fled Crash Scene in Indiana

A Knox County Sheriff’s Office drone helped locate and apprehend a suspect who fled into wooded terrain after crashing a vehicle late Thursday night, according to a report from MyWabashValley.com.

Drone-Assisted Search in Cornfields and Wooded Areas

The incident began around 11:00 p.m. on September 4 when deputies responded to a vehicle crash on North Golf Course Road. A caller reported an intoxicated man had collided with a fence. When officers approached a white male near the scene, the suspect fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. Deputies quickly deployed the department’s drone to assist in the search. The unmanned aircraft scanned adjoining cornfields and densely wooded terrain, allowing law enforcement to track the suspect’s movements more effectively than by foot alone. The suspect eventually surrendered after a K-9 officer was brought to the scene to assist in the pursuit.

Suspect Arrested and Facing Multiple Charges

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 25-year-old Lyndon Goodpastor. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Knox County Jail.

According to the sheriff’s office, Goodpastor faces:

  • Resisting law enforcement (Class A misdemeanor)
  • Criminal mischief (Class A misdemeanor)
  • Leaving the scene of an accident (Class B misdemeanor)
  • Operating while intoxicated (Class C misdemeanor)

Jail records show he remained in custody Friday morning on a $4,000 bond.

Drones as a Force Multiplier in Law Enforcement

This incident highlights the growing role of drones in rural law enforcement operations. Aerial platforms provide deputies with an expanded field of view at night and in challenging environments such as cornfields, wooded terrain, or difficult-to-access properties. By deploying a drone, sheriff’s deputies were able to maintain situational awareness, reduce risks to officers on the ground, and locate the suspect more efficiently. This aligns with broader national trends, as more police and sheriff’s departments adopt drone programs to supplement patrols, search-and-rescue operations, and tactical responses.

DroneXL’s Take

Drones continue to prove their value in law enforcement, particularly in time-sensitive cases where suspects attempt to evade capture in difficult terrain. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office leveraged its aerial unit effectively, preventing the need for prolonged ground searches that could have endangered officers and delayed resolution.

As more agencies implement drone programs, questions remain about balancing efficiency with privacy concerns—especially when drones are used for monitoring public areas. Should policies mandate strict limits on drone surveillance outside of active incidents, or will broader aerial monitoring become standard police practice?

What do you think—are drones becoming an indispensable tool for public safety, or do communities need tighter oversight on how they’re used? Share your thoughts in the comments.
