Poland and Latvia have imposed broad restrictions on civilian flights along their eastern borders after about 19 Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace early Wednesday, according to PANSA and Latvian government statements. The measures tighten control over airspace near Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia to protect national security and facilitate NATO operations. The Polish restrictions took effect Wednesday at 10 p.m. and will remain until December 9, the maximum one-time period permitted by law. Latvia’s restrictions begin Thursday at 6 p.m. and extend through at least September 18, with possible extensions.

Poland Enforces Strict Airspace Controls

In Poland, the restricted zone covers areas along the borders with Ukraine and Belarus. Only military aircraft are authorized from sunset to sunrise. Daytime flights must file a plan, carry active transponders, and maintain continuous radio communication with air traffic control. The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) emphasized that civilian drones are banned at all times within the zone. NATO military jets operating on quick reaction alerts, under call signs GARDA or ALPHA SCRAMBLE, are permitted.

Exemptions apply to flights with official designations such as HEAD (heads of state), STATE (government missions), SAR (search and rescue), HOSP/MEDEVAC (medical evacuations), and FFR (firefighting). Additional allowances may be made for missions tied to protecting human or animal life, responding to natural disasters, or safeguarding critical infrastructure.

Latvia Follows with Border Restrictions

Latvia announced a similar ban along its borders with Russia and Belarus. Defense Minister Andris Sprūds said the restrictions are designed to simplify detection of aerial threats and support NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. The Latvian government stated the restrictions could be extended beyond September 18 if security conditions demand.

Regional and NATO Implications

The airspace restrictions highlight growing tensions in NATO’s eastern flank as Russia’s drone campaign against Ukraine increasingly spills over into neighboring countries. NATO’s ability to rapidly scramble jets is central to both countries’ defense measures By limiting civilian and drone traffic, Poland and Latvia aim to reduce risks of accidental clashes and give military forces clearer situational awareness.

DroneXL’s Take

The ban on civilian drones underscores how quickly drone regulations can shift in response to geopolitical threats. For professional and recreational pilots near sensitive borders, the episode is a reminder that airspace access can be restricted overnight, sometimes for weeks or months. It raises key questions: How long will NATO allies tolerate repeated drone incursions before shifting from reactive to preventive measures? And how will drone operators adapt to an environment where political and military decisions increasingly define where—and whether—they can fly?
