Drones Help Medina Police Locate Missing Woman Near Crows Nest Lane

Medina Police and the Medina County Sheriff’s Office used drones to locate a missing woman on September 11 near Crows Nest Lane in the Medina/Litchfield area, safely resolving the search after an aerial thermal sweep identified her location and guided ground units in, according to the City of Medina Police public information log . The case follows another successful drone-assisted rescue days earlier, when deputies used thermal imaging and optical zoom to find an 83-year-old woman in a soybean field.

UAVs in Missing-Person Searches

Police records show that on September 11, Medina Police assisted the Sheriff’s Office by deploying drones for a search listed at “9615 CROWS NEST LN, LITCHFIELD.” The entry confirms: “Assisted MCSO with drones for missing female, she was located” .

In the earlier Harrisville Township case, a Sheriff’s UAV operator launched within minutes and identified an elderly woman’s heat signature from the air. Using the drone’s zoom payload, the operator confirmed visual details of her clothing before directing deputies and EMS to the scene .

Thermal Imaging Speeds Rescue

The Harrisville Township operation demonstrates the value of aerial thermal sensors in search-and-rescue missions. Deputies reported locating the missing woman roughly a quarter mile (0.25 mi) from her last known point within 15 minutes of drone launch. She may have been on the ground for more than three hours before detection. Officials said the woman did not require hospitalization following her recovery .

Multi-Agency Coordination

The September 11 search highlights how Medina Police and the Sheriff’s Office coordinate UAV assets in missing-person cases. The Harrisville Township rescue involved not only deputies but also the Lodi Fire Department and nearby residents, underscoring the importance of ground-to-air collaboration once a drone operator cues in on a target .

Policy and Training Implications

Back-to-back successful deployments in Medina County underscore a repeatable workflow: rapid drone launch, thermal imaging sweep, optical confirmation, and guided ground interception. These outcomes reflect the growing importance of UAVs in public safety, especially for searches involving elderly or vulnerable residents. Local reports also emphasized that timely alerts from family or neighbors are critical to enabling drone-assisted recoveries  .

DroneXL’s Take

The Medina County rescues show how drones have become a vital tool for public safety—cutting search times from hours to minutes. Thermal sensors and zoom optics are proving indispensable in real-world operations, but their effectiveness hinges on training and inter-agency coordination. The question for agencies nationwide is clear: what standards for equipment, readiness, and mutual aid will ensure similar success in other communities?
