DJI Mavic 4 Pro Gets Major Camera Update with In-Flight Focal Length Switching

DJI released a significant firmware update for the Mavic 4 Pro on September 25, 2025, introducing the ability to switch camera focal lengths during video recording—a feature that brings new creative flexibility to aerial cinematographers.

The firmware version 01.00.0300 addresses a long-standing limitation that previously required pilots to stop recording to change focal lengths, potentially missing crucial moments during dynamic shoots. This update applies to both Normal and Slow Motion video modes, marking a substantial improvement in the drone’s operational capabilities for professional content creators and enthusiasts alike.

Enhanced Video Recording Capabilities

The headline feature allows seamless focal length transitions while recording video, enabling operators to zoom in or out without interrupting their shots. This functionality transforms the Mavic 4 Pro into a more versatile aerial platform, particularly valuable for capturing events, wildlife, or action sequences where stopping to adjust settings isn’t practical.

Additionally, DJI introduced new Portrait mode options, including lossless and cropped vertical shooting configurations. These settings, accessible through the portrait mode preferences under shooting parameters, cater to the growing demand for social media-optimized content formats.

Dynamic Home Point and Controller Integration

The update brings dynamic Home Point functionality when paired with the DJI RC 2 remote controller. This feature allows the drone’s return-to-home location to update automatically based on the controller’s position—critical for operators filming from moving vehicles or boats.

The firmware package includes updates for both the DJI RC Pro 2 (v01.00.0400) and DJI RC 2 (v07.00.0100) remote controllers, ensuring full compatibility with the new features. Users must also update to DJI Fly App version 1.18.0 to access all functionality.

Building on Previous Updates

This September release builds upon substantial improvements introduced earlier in 2025. The May firmware update (v01.00.0100) added several professional-grade features including audio recording via the RC Pro 2 controller, cloud storage for Waypoint Flight tasks, and tint adjustment in manual white balance for the triple camera system.

That earlier update also introduced the “Fold Arm to Power Off” feature, gimbal roll control in Spotlight mode, and extended low-angle perspectives for the Hasselblad and medium telephoto cameras in Sphere Panorama mode. Combined with optimized image quality and obstacle sensing performance, these updates have significantly enhanced the Mavic 4 Pro’s capabilities throughout 2025.

DroneXL’s Take

The ability to change focal lengths mid-recording is a game-changer that puts the Mavic 4 Pro closer to professional cinema drones costing thousands more. This isn’t just a convenience feature—it fundamentally changes how aerial cinematographers can approach their shots.

The timing of these updates suggests DJI is responding directly to user feedback, particularly from content creators who need flexibility without sacrificing recording continuity. With vertical video now dominating social platforms, the enhanced Portrait mode options show DJI understands where the market is heading.

  1. I’d love an ATTI mode option. I learned to fly cinematically 10 years ago and I prefer the ability to float with ease. Enterprise model thankfully have the feature I think these should as well.
