Teledyne FLIR & Gremsy Unveil New AI Thermal Payloads

Hello fellow pilots! The world of high-end thermal imaging just got a major upgrade. Two of the biggest names in UAV technology, Teledyne FLIR and Gremsy, have teamed up. The result? Two new NDAA-compliant thermal payloads, the ORUS L and Lynx, both powered by the awesome FLIR Boson+ infrared camera module.

Better Partnership Than When Mr. Smith Met Mr. Wesson

The Boson+ long-wave infrared (LWIR) module is known for its clarity, sensitivity, and performance in tough environments. By integrating it into Gremsy’s lightweight gimbal systems, the companies have created compact payloads that deliver sharp thermal imagery.

These payloads are perfect for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as public safety missions. They are ITAR-free and optimized for size, weight, and power (SWaP), giving pilots reliable situational awareness day or night.

Jared Faraudo, Vice President at Teledyne FLIR OEM, said the collaboration reinforces “Thermal by FLIR’s role in enabling advanced, NDAA-compliant payloads for professional users.”

The Lynx and ORUS L: Different Tools

The Lynx payload is a compact ISR solution designed for speed and endurance. It combines thermal and visible imaging to help operators respond faster in emergencies. This makes it ideal for drone-as-first-responder (DFR) programs, defense, and search-and-rescue.

But the ORUS L is the real beast here. It is Gremsy’s first AI-powered spherical payload, built around the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX platform. This means it can detect objects, track targets, and analyze scenes in real-time, right on the drone.

The system includes electro-optical, radiometric thermal, and laser rangefinder sensors, making it a versatile tool for infrastructure inspection and emergency response. It’s also rated IP55, so it can handle tough conditions without quitting.

Expanding the FLIR Ecosystem

Gremsy CTO Huy Pham called the collaboration a major step toward smarter aerial intelligence. By combining aerodynamic efficiency with real-time analysis and FLIR’s proven thermal vision, these payloads strike a perfect balance between ruggedness and precision.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. Teledyne FLIR OEM is also expanding its global partnerships, recently announcing a new collaboration with Japanese drone manufacturer ACSL. These moves all point to a clear focus on secure, NDAA-compliant technology for professional drone users around the world.

DroneXL’s Take

This partnership between Teledyne FLIR and Gremsy is fantastic news. It’s another clear sign that the professional payload market is maturing at an incredible speed. It’s not just about strapping a camera to a gimbal anymore.

Right now the biggest challenge for professional and public safety pilots in the U.S. is finding gear that checks all the boxes. You need it to be lightweight, reliable, and, increasingly, NDAA-compliant to meet government and corporate security standards. This partnership hits all those marks.

The ORUS L, in particular, is the really exciting piece of this. Sticking an NVIDIA Jetson chip inside for onboard AI is a game-changer. It means the drone itself can detect and track targets, which is a massive force multiplier for a search and rescue team or a police department. This is the future of smart, tactical payloads, and it’s a huge win for the entire drone community.
