Drone Dispute Turns Violent in Coweta County, GA

A Halloween night disagreement over a drone flight in Coweta County, Georgia, escalated into gunfire and an arrest, as Times Herald reports and according to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a home on Providence Church Road after receiving reports that a man had fired a gun at his neighbor. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Dustin Lee Gaddy, told officers that he was flying his drone on his property when a neighbor shot at it.

When Gaddy confronted the man about shooting at his drone, the situation quickly turned physical. The two exchanged slaps after a heated argument, according to the incident report. Another neighbor on the phone overheard the confrontation and tried to calm things down before it got worse.

But as Gaddy walked away, the dispute reignited. He reportedly approached another neighbor, slapped him, and was slapped back. Moments later, Gaddy pulled out a pistol and fired a shot beside the victim’s head. Deputies said the victim was so close he could see the flash and smoke from the gun.

Deputies recovered the weapon, a spent shell casing, and additional bullets from the scene. Gaddy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. No injuries were reported and specially, no drones were harmed during the arrest.

The rising tension

Incidents like this highlight how quickly these disputes can turn dangerous. Many property owners remain unsure about the boundaries of airspace rights, leading to confrontations when UAVs are flown near private land.

In most cases, shooting at a UAV is VERY illegal and considered destruction of property or reckless endangerment. Likewise, responding with violence can lead to serious criminal charges. These misunderstandings show the need for better public education on drone laws and safe flight practices.

DroneXL’s Take

This is another example of how emotions and misinformation about drone privacy can spiral out of control. UAV pilots and property owners alike need to stay calm, know the laws, and avoid physical confrontations. Personally, everytome I have to fly a drone in a residential area, my first action is to INFORM everyone what I am doing and more important, WHY. Drones are here to stay, and as the skies get busier, knowing your rights and responsibilities is the best way to keep everyone safe.
