DJI Osmo Action 6 Accessories Guide: What I Actually Use In The Field
Amazon Drone Deals: DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo with DJI RC2 now for $1,099!
Good day folks, Shawn here from Air Photography. DJI has launched the brand new DJI Osmo Action 6, and I thought I would put together an accessory guide for those who are picking one up over the holiday season. If you are brand new to action cameras, you might be wondering which accessories will actually enhance your camera’s capabilities versus which ones will just collect dust.
In this guide, I am going to cover my favorite accessories that I use with my DJI action cameras. Some of the footage examples throughout come from the Action 5 because a lot of these accessories are cross-compatible. They work with your Action 6, Action 5, and in some cases, older models. You can watch my full video on this topic below.
New lens options for creative flexibility
One of the first things you may want to consider are the new lenses that DJI offers for the Osmo Action 6. They have a new macro lens that allows you to get nice and close to certain subjects. What makes this lens different is that you can adjust the focal distance, so it is also great for vlogging and even taking far-off shots. That means you do not have to remove it when you change the distance at which you are filming.
DJI also has an updated FOV Boost lens for the Action 6. They had one for the Action 5 as well, but this version has been updated specifically for the new camera. This lens gives you an extremely wide 182-degree field of view, making it great for point-of-view shots and action scenarios where you want maximum coverage.
Both lenses are auto-detected. When you install them onto the camera, the Action 6 knows they are there and sets the camera up accordingly. No need to dig through settings menus.
If you are someone who uses ND filters, DJI sells a nice set for the Osmo Action 6. The kit comes with an ND8, ND16, and ND32. They are friction fit, so you do not have to remove the lens cover to use them. I do not use ND filters with my action cameras very often, but for creators who want that cinematic motion blur, they are worth considering.
Body mounts for immersive POV footage
These next two accessories are probably my most-used items. The neck mount and the DJI chest mount are fantastic for capturing point-of-view shots. If you are riding a bike, going for a hike, or just want those immersive first-person perspectives, either of these will work well.
I use them differently depending on what I am doing. If you are on a mountain bike or anything with a lot of movement, you definitely want the chest mount. It holds tight to your body and keeps the footage stable. The neck mount works well if you are not riding at high speeds. On an e-bike cruising a smooth surface, you can still get nice point-of-view shots with it. But over really bumpy terrain at a high rate of speed, it can bounce around and make the footage shaky.
The nice thing about the neck mount is that it goes on and comes off quickly. It is comfortable to wear and still gets interesting shots. Chest mounts work great, but I sometimes find them uncomfortable for extended wear. It comes down to what type of content you are capturing.
Both mounts accept the magnetic quick-release system, so you can easily attach and detach your camera.
Battery handle for all-day handheld filming
DJI first introduced a battery handle for the Action 5, and they have a new updated version for the Action 6. Either one will work with either camera. The main difference is how the magnetic mounts function on top. One of the new features of the Osmo Action 6 is that the magnetics are reversible, and the new handle accommodates that.
This accessory is essentially a battery grip that plugs right into your camera and feeds it extra power. If you are doing a lot of handheld filming throughout the day, it is a simple way to extend your battery life significantly. The handle has built-in controls for powering on the camera and starting and stopping recording. It also features a ball head so you can easily adjust the angle, plus a built-in tripod for setting the camera down for timelapses.
GPS remote for data overlays and remote control
The GPS remote for the Osmo series performs two important tasks. First, it is a remote, so you can easily control your camera when it is mounted away from you. Second, it captures GPS data and embeds it into your video.
When you bring the footage into the DJI Mimo app, you can add different gauges and speed information as overlays right on top of the video. Some people buy this just for the remote capabilities. It comes with a watch strap so you can wear it on your wrist, plus a smaller strap that wraps around a bike handlebar or an extension pole.
Wireless microphones for better audio
DJI makes it easy to add a wireless microphone to your Osmo Action 6 with Osmo Audio. You can pair any of their wireless microphones directly to the camera without needing a receiver.
The DJI Mic Mini has great sound and is fairly inexpensive if you buy just the transmitter. Or you can go with the newer DJI Mic 3, which has a few extra features but costs more. Both work extremely well with the Osmo Action 6. For vloggers and content creators who need clean audio, one of these microphones is an essential upgrade from the built-in mic.
Floating hand grip for water activities
If you are going on vacation and filming in or around water, a floating hand grip is worth considering. You attach one of the magnetic mounts to it, and it has a built-in wrist strap. That strap is important even if you are not going in water. If you are handheld filming on a roller coaster or in any situation where you want the camera secured to you, the wrist strap adds peace of mind.
The real value is that if you drop your camera in water, this grip keeps it floating. It has a bright orange end so it is visible in the water, plus a rubberized grip that will not get slippery when wet.
Bike mounts for cycling content
Depending on how you use your Osmo Action 6, a bike mount might be essential. DJI sells a few different options.
One has a built-in magnetic mount designed for the Action 5 and Action 4, but it works with the Action 6. The only difference is the magnetics do not help line it up right away like the new reversible mounts do. You have to finesse it into position, but once connected, it is secure.
They also have an articulating mount where you attach one of your magnetic mounts to it. The articulating design gives you more flexibility in positioning and lets you get creative with different angles. Either option works well for handlebar mounting.
Extension pole and tripod: my most valuable combo
For me, probably the most useful accessory that every camera bag should have is an extension pole. These are great for action shots when skiing, vlogging, or just getting wider angles. Sometimes I mount the pole on my bike handlebar for a wider shot of me riding.
Depending on which Osmo Action 6 package you purchased, you may already have one. If not, they can be purchased separately.
What makes extension poles extremely valuable is that you can attach a tripod base to the bottom. Now you essentially have a full-height tripod for filming YouTube videos or other social media content. It is not super stable on uneven surfaces or in heavy wind, but on a fairly flat surface, it works remarkably well. Most of the videos you see on my YouTube channel where I am on a tripod use exactly this setup.
I use an aluminum tripod base from MOSA that came as an accessory with some other equipment years ago. These are readily available on Amazon. I recommend getting an aluminum base rather than a plastic one, as the plastic versions can be flimsy. A nice wide aluminum base stays stable.
DJI also sells a handheld mini tripod and extension pole. They have a new version for the Action 6 with the reversible magnetic mounting, but the older version for the Action 5 and Action 4 works as well. In its simplest form, it is a handheld grip. It extends for vlogging reach and has built-in tripod legs for setting the camera down.
Extra magnetic mounts for convenience
One thing you may want to consider is picking up extra magnetic mounts. What makes magnetic mounting so convenient is that you can move your camera from accessory to accessory without messing around with thumb screws. If you have three or four accessories you use regularly that need magnetic mounts, it makes sense to have one attached to each.
I keep magnetic mounts on my extension pole, chest mount, neck mount, and articulating bike mount. This allows me to move my camera quickly between setups without any delay.
Finding the right accessories for your workflow
At the end of the day, it comes down to how you are going to use your camera and what kind of content you will be capturing. Some accessories might be essential for your workflow while others will not fit how you shoot at all.
