Russia’s Geran-5 Jet Drone Uses Western Electronics

Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency GUR says Russia has deployed a newly identified jet powered attack drone called the Geran-5, a platform that departs sharply from earlier Geran models derived from Iran’s Shahed series, Business Insider reports.

Unlike the familiar delta wing layout of previous Geran loitering munitions, the Geran-5 uses a traditional fixed wing airframe. Ukrainian analysts say its shape closely resembles Iran’s Karrar unmanned aerial vehicle, which itself is widely believed to be based on the decades old American MQM-107 Streaker target drone.

GUR released images of the wreckage earlier this month, stating the drone was first observed after a Russian attack in early January. The agency describes the Geran-5 as a newly introduced system rather than a minor upgrade.

American and Chinese parts found inside

According to GUR’s component analysis, the Geran-5 contains more than a dozen foreign made electronic parts, including at least nine produced by American companies.

These components reportedly include digital signal processors, clock generators, and a radio transceiver. Ukrainian officials say the presence of these parts highlights Russia’s continued ability to bypass international sanctions through global supply chains.

Several key components were traced back to China, including a mesh network radio modem with a reported retail price of roughly $8,100. GUR also identified a German made transistor among the recovered hardware.

Ukraine has repeatedly warned that Russia’s weapons industry continues to rely heavily on foreign electronics, despite export controls intended to limit Moscow’s access to advanced technology.

Faster, longer range, and air launched potential

GUR claims the Geran-5 is powered by a more capable Chinese turbojet engine than earlier jet powered Geran variants. The drone is estimated to reach speeds of up to 373 miles per hour, significantly faster than the Geran-3, which Ukrainian officials previously estimated at around 230 miles per hour.

The agency believes the Geran-5 could have a range of up to 600 miles while carrying a warhead weighing approximately 200 pounds.

More notably, GUR says Russia may attempt to launch the drone from Su-25 fighter aircraft rather than from ground based systems, extending its operational reach.

Ukrainian intelligence also stated that Russia is considering equipping the platform with R-73 air to air missiles, potentially allowing the drone to threaten Ukrainian aircraft.

DroneXL’s Take

The Geran-5 suggests Russia is no longer just iterating on Iranian Shahed designs but actively blending multiple legacy concepts with modern off the shelf electronics.

The continued appearance of American and allied components inside Russian drones underscores how porous global supply chains remain, even under heavy sanctions.

If air launched deployment becomes operational, the Geran-5 could mark a meaningful escalation in how loitering munitions are used, shifting them from slow saturation weapons toward faster, more flexible strike platforms.
