GoPro Launches 8K Cinema Cameras With 1-Inch Sensors

GoPro just made the jump from action camera company to cinema camera company. The MISSION 1 Series, announced today via press release from the company, is a lineup of three compact cameras built around a new 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor and GoPro’s new GP3 processor.

The flagship MISSION 1 PRO shoots 8K video at 60 frames per second in a body that’s waterproof to 66 feet without a housing. Pricing will be revealed at NAB in Las Vegas, April 19 to 22.

The MISSION 1 Lineup

The series includes three models that share the same sensor and processor but split on resolution and form factor.

MISSION 1 PRO is the flagship. It captures 8K60 in 16:9, 4K at 240 frames per second for 8X slow motion, and can burst 1080p at 960 frames per second for 32X slow motion in 10-second clips. It also shoots 8K30 and 4K120 in Open Gate 4:3, giving editors full-sensor captures they can reframe for any aspect ratio.

The camera is waterproof to 66 feet out of the box, takes 50-megapixel RAW photos, and runs for over 5 hours at 1080p30 on the new Enduro 2 battery. More than 3 hours at 4K30.

MISSION 1 is the same camera with lower ceilings. It caps at 8K30 in 16:9, 4K120, and 1080p240 for slow motion. Open Gate tops out at 4K120. Same sensor, same processor, same image quality, same waterproofing. It’s the model for creators who don’t need the extreme frame rates of the Pro but still want the 1-inch sensor and GP3 image pipeline.

MISSION 1 PRO ILS is the wildcard. It’s a mirrorless version of the Pro with an interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lens mount. Same sensor, same processor, same video specs as the PRO, but compatible with the massive universe of MFT lenses and, through adapters, virtually any lens on the market.

It supports in-camera HyperSmooth stabilization with any rectilinear prime lens. GoPro is calling it the world’s smallest, most rugged high-speed cinema camera. The ILS is weatherproof rather than fully waterproof, and it ships in Q3 2026.

Under the Hood

The new 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor is the biggest GoPro has ever used. Native pixel size is 1.6 microns, but in Quad Bayer mode the sensor fuses pixels to create 3.2-micron effective pixels for low-light performance. GoPro claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range at the sensor level, which puts it in territory previously reserved for cameras costing several times more.

The GP3 processor is built on a 5-nanometer design, and GoPro says it delivers category-leading power efficiency. That’s what enables the long runtimes and thermal performance. An onboard AI Neural Processing Unit handles video pixel processing and low-light image enhancement.

The processor also powers 240Mbps bitrate capture, 10-bit color with GP-Log2, HLG HDR, and timecode sync for multi-camera productions.

Audio gets an upgrade too. Four built-in microphones deliver improved stereo recording and wind noise reduction. The cameras support 32-bit float audio recording to prevent clipping, and Bluetooth 5.3 audio lets you wirelessly connect compatible devices.

A new wireless mic system with 10-gram magnetic transmitters offers 24-bit/48kHz audio, dynamic noise reduction, and 6.5 hours of runtime per mic with up to 490-foot wireless range.

The lens design delivers a 159-degree native field of view, the widest in its class. The rear OLED display is 14% larger than previous GoPro flagships, and the buttons are taller and chunkier for gloved operation.

The Accessory Ecosystem

GoPro built out a full accessory system around MISSION 1. The new Media Mod adds a built-in multi-pattern mic with eight pickup patterns, three 3.5mm ports (external mic, line-in for timecode, headset monitoring), and micro-HDMI output up to 4K60 for external monitors or live broadcast.

The Volta 2 battery grip packs 5,800mAh and delivers up to 9 hours of 4K30 recording. An ND filter 4-pack (ND8, ND16, ND32, ND64) auto-detects which filter is installed and adjusts shutter speed automatically. A protective housing extends waterproofing to 196 feet.

The Point-and-Shoot Grip converts between an ergonomic handheld grip and a metal cage with cold shoe mounts, 1/4-20 threading, and magnetic latch compatibility. GoPro also announced a Fluid Pro AI gimbal for the Ultimate Creator Edition bundle, promising AI-driven subject tracking and advanced stabilization.

MISSION 1 PRO, the Grip Edition, and MISSION 1 will be available for preorder starting May 21, with on-shelf availability May 28. The ILS, Creator Edition, and Ultimate Creator Edition ship Q3 2026. Accessories roll out on a staggered basis from May through Q3.

DroneXL’s Take

Let’s be straight, this announcement isn’t about drones. But if you fly FPV cinema rigs, it should have your full attention.

A 1-inch sensor in a GoPro form factor changes the payload math for FPV filmmaking. The cameras that FPV pilots currently strap to their builds are either GoPro HEROs (great stabilization, small sensor) or full-size mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7 series (great image quality, heavy and fragile).

MISSION 1 PRO sits right in the gap. You get the 1-inch sensor, 8K60, 4K240 slow motion, GP-Log2, 10-bit color, and 14 stops of dynamic range in a body that’s designed to survive impacts and waterproof to 66 feet. That’s a cinema-grade imaging pipeline in a package that weighs what a GoPro weighs.

The MISSION 1 PRO ILS with its MFT lens mount is even more interesting for larger FPV builds that can carry the weight. Imagine pairing that sensor and processor with a compact MFT prime for shallow depth of field on a cinelifter.

GoPro’s in-camera HyperSmooth working with a rectilinear prime could eliminate the need for a separate gimbal on certain builds, saving weight and complexity.

Then there’s the defense angle. GoPro announced just yesterday that it’s formally exploring defense and aerospace market opportunities, hiring Oliver Wyman to identify use cases. The company’s cameras already flew on the Artemis II spacecraft.

A rugged, compact camera with a 1-inch sensor, 8K capture, 5-plus-hour runtime, and waterproofing to 66 feet checks a lot of boxes for ISR payloads on small UAS platforms. The timing of the MISSION 1 launch alongside the defense market announcement isn’t subtle.

The pricing will be the real story when NAB opens next week. If GoPro can keep MISSION 1 PRO under $1,000, they’ll have built the best FPV cinema camera on the market and put every compact camera manufacturer on notice.

If it lands above $1,500, the value proposition gets murkier against dedicated cinema cameras that offer more control. Either way, the spec sheet is legitimate. GoPro hasn’t built a better action camera. They’ve built a different kind of camera entirely.
